Dozens of witches and warlocks will paddle into Vancouver next weekend

26 September 20252 Mins Read

One of Vancouver’s quirkiest traditions is back next week! Now in its fifth year, the annual Witchilano Paddle at Kits Beach is a spooky season favourite, inviting Vancouverites to don their witchiest outfits and paddle as a group — broomsticks and all.

Last year’s event saw dozens of “witches and warlocks” atop their boards, with onlookers taking it all in from the Burrard Bridge, in addition to the beach.

Ready to trade your cauldron for a board? Spooky season enthusiasts will meet at Kitsilano Beach in front of the main washroom building at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025. Once everyone gathers and some much-needed group photos are taken, participants will hit the water around 11:30 a.m. and cackle their way toward Granville Island, casting spells along the way.

The group journey will loop back to Kitsilano Beach, but participants are welcome to paddle one-way as well.

To participate, paddlers must wear a witch or warlock costume and try to dress in all black. Event organizers recommend hitting up your local thrift stores if you require some spooky attire.

Note that while this event is open to paddlers of all skill levels, there will be no instruction for beginners, so it’s best if it’s not your first time on a board!

That said, the more the spookier, so spread the word and consider arriving with a packaged food donation or two for SHARE Family and Community Services. Items such as nutritious canned goods, whole grain rice or legumes, and baby formula are the highest priority, followed by cash for the organization to put towards its most-needed items.

Arriving in a time pinch? There is a pay parking lot at the beach just off of Arbutus Street near the tennis courts.

Those who prefer to take in the view from Granville Island, the Burrard Bridge, or the seawall between Kits Beach and Granville Island will have quite the view!

Happy spooky season, Vancouver.

When: Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025
Time: 11 a.m.
Where: 1305 Arbutus St.
Cost: Free and by-donation
