Younger Travelers Lead Surge in UK’s Overseas Travel Confidence, ABTA Reports :: Hospitality Trends

Younger Travelers Lead Surge in UK’s Overseas Travel Confidence, ABTA Reports

The latest findings from the ABTA 2025 Travel Confidence Index indicate a significant increase in the UK’s confidence in overseas travel. This upward trend is particularly notable among younger adults and those who have booked their travels through professionals or opted for package holidays.

Overview of the Travel Confidence Index

ABTA’s annual Travel Confidence Index, now in its third iteration, has consistently shown an increase in confidence among UK travelers. The overall index score for 2025 stands at +53, marking a six-point increase from the previous year and a twelve-point rise since the index’s inception in 2023. This positive shift underscores a growing reassurance among the public regarding overseas travel.

Demographic Insights

The increase in travel confidence is most pronounced among younger demographics. Individuals aged 18-24 saw their confidence index rise from +48 to +57, while those between 25 and 34 years experienced a remarkable 19-point jump to +79. This group, along with the 35-44 age bracket, which scored +64, represents the most confident segments of the population. Conversely, the 65+ age group, despite being the least confident, showed improvement, with their score increasing from +26 to +33.

Factors Influencing Confidence

The booking method plays a crucial role in influencing travelers’ confidence. Those who utilized the services of a travel professional reported a confidence score of +78, a six-point increase from the previous year. Similarly, those who took package holidays reported a confidence score of +80. These findings highlight the importance of professional guidance and comprehensive travel packages in fostering traveler confidence.

Consumer Priorities and Industry Response

Travelers have expressed specific concerns that need to be addressed to further boost their confidence. Top priorities include obtaining the correct travel documents, such as passports and visas, which 68% of respondents deemed essential. Other critical areas include guarantees of repatriation in case of a travel company’s insolvency, transparency in pricing, travel insurance, and financial protection. Addressing these concerns can significantly enhance consumer confidence, as evidenced by the high ratings of importance.

ABTA’s Role and Future Outlook

Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive of ABTA, emphasized the association’s commitment to boosting travel confidence. The consistent rise in the Travel Confidence Index reflects the effectiveness of ABTA’s strategies, including ensuring that travelers are well-informed and prepared through their member agencies. The upcoming ABTA’s Holiday Habits 2025-26 report and the 2025 Travel Convention in Calvià, Mallorca, are anticipated to further this agenda.

Conclusion

The ABTA 2025 Travel Confidence Index shows robust growth in confidence among UK travelers, driven by younger demographics and those who seek professional assistance in planning their trips. As the industry continues to address key consumer concerns, the outlook for UK overseas travel appears increasingly positive.
