An elevated lake and the most dramatic mountain peaks in Squamish await at this wilderness park

6 October 20253 Mins Read

Home to the most dramatic mountain peaks in Squamish, Tantalus Park (situated just north of Squamish) is a fantastic spot to set your sights on this season, and it’s well within a day trip’s distance from Vancouver.

At 3,800 feet above sea level, Lake Lovely Water is the aptly-named crown jewel of the wilderness park. Those who embark on the hike up to enjoy it will be rewarded with 360-degree views of the surrounding old-growth forest and expansive glaciers.

The lake is also packed with trout, making it a great destination for anglers.

In addition to fishing, visitors can enjoy ample climbing and helicopter-assisted hiking opportunities, as well as advanced backcountry skiing during the winter months, according to Tourism Squamish.

Want to extend your visit overnight? Campers can access tent pads or book a stay at the Jim Haberl or Tantalus Huts through the Alpine Club of Canada.

How to get to the elevated lake

The Lovely Water Trailhead is accessible by boat only from the west side of the Squamish River. Note that BC Parks does not recommend using the dirt road on the east side of the river, as the area is First Nations land.

After a quick boat ride, it’s a rugged 6.5 km hike ahead, taking approximately four to six hours to complete. Alternatively, visitors can be dropped off at the lake via Blackcomb Helicopters or Black Tusk Helicopter Inc.

If you do decide to go with the trail, remember to wear the appropriate clothing and footwear, as it gets quite steep.

To get to Tantalus Park, travel west from the highway onto the road that leads into the Upper Squamish Valley, taking a left at the fork in the road past the Cheekeye Bridge. After 2 km, turn left onto the unmarked dirt road and travel another 2 km to the river.

Lastly, keep in mind that personal watercraft is not permitted on the lake, except for those registered to the bookable huts.

Ready to start exploring the area? Consider bookmarking Tantalus Park this fall and enjoy sweeping views like no other.

How to get there: Drive 25 minutes from Vancouver to Tantalus Park via BC-1A/BC-99 N and BC-99 N.
