Prince William Overcoming 'Unsupported, Lonely and Insecure' Past, Says Royal Expert

7 October 20253 Mins Read

A royal expert says Prince William has overcome past family hardships to embrace his role as a hands-on father and future king.

FOX News spoke to broadcaster and royal expert Helena Chard about the Prince of Wales’s personal evolution. Chard claims that by confronting feelings of being “unsupported, lonely, and insecure,” William breaks a parenting pattern to ensure his children experience a stable childhood.

Chard says, “William and Harry experienced a broken family unit, with their parents embroiled in constant, destructive battles. On occasion, William and Harry felt unsupported, lonely and insecure, leading to sibling rivalry.”

The expert continued, “Prince William especially felt unsure about his future destiny. His parents loved both him and Harry; however, they would have benefited from additional guidance.”

William relies on his marriage to Kate Middleton for the stability he reportedly lacked as a child. Together, they are raising their kids in a way that is strikingly different from previous generations of royals.

Prince William talks royal parenting

Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, have taken a different approach to royal parenting than previous generations. He has drawn inspiration from his late mother, Princess Diana, and has further reshaped the royal approach to parenting.

Per PEOPLE Magazine, Diana wanted her sons to have as normal an upbringing as possible. She prioritized sending them to a public school, taking them on royal overseas trips and to theme parks, exposing them to real-world struggles (William spoke about visiting a homeless shelter with Diana in a clip shared by The Independent), and allowing them to have fast food (McDonald’s was a favorite).

Before Diana, royal children weren’t included in overseas tours and were primarily raised and schooled by nannies. Children typically didn’t attend public schools until their teenage years (King Charles attended his first public school at 13).

Despite the strides Diana made as a parent, William and Harry still witnessed the public unraveling of her marriage to Charles. Reflecting on those experiences, William told Eugene Levy in an episode of The Reluctant Traveler that he is intentionally taking a different approach to raising his family, as reported by The Huffington Post.

William and Kate have three children: George, 12; Charlotte, 10; and Louis, 7. The Prince of Wales makes fun a priority for his kids, revealing that they enjoy jumping on the trampoline and playing sports. Currently, he and Kate have also implemented a no-cellphone rule, encouraging screen-free family time.

Prince William continues to break free from the struggles of his past. By prioritizing hands-on parenting with his wife and creating a stable, nurturing environment for George, Charlotte, and Louis, he is not only redefining what it means to be a modern royal but also turning his own childhood challenges into lessons of compassion, resilience, and connection.
