How Young Travelers Are Redefining Flexibility in Travel

Flexibility in travel bookings has become increasingly important for U.S. travelers, with younger generations leading the demand for adaptable travel options

Recent research commissioned by eDreams ODIGEO highlights a significant shift in the priorities of U.S. travelers. The study, which surveyed 9,000 global respondents, including 2,000 from the United States, reveals that flexibility in travel bookings is now a top priority for many vacationers. The findings indicate that 51% of U.S. travelers consider flexibility more important now than it was five years ago. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger travelers, with 60% of those under 34 emphasizing the importance of adaptable travel options.

Changing Preferences Among Younger Travelers

The research identifies a clear generational divide in travel preferences. Younger travelers, often referred to as “Generation Flex,” are driving the demand for flexibility. Over a third of these travelers (37%) are more inclined to book longer and more expensive trips if they are offered flexible options. This flexibility not only provides peace of mind but also encourages more confident booking decisions. In contrast, only 23% of travelers over 65 prioritize flexibility in their travel plans.

Mix and Match Airline Preferences

The study also highlights a strong preference among U.S. travelers for the ability to mix and match airlines for different legs of their journeys. A significant 76% of respondents value the freedom to choose different airlines for outbound and return flights, allowing them to save money and secure better flight times. This preference is again more pronounced among younger travelers, with only 7% of those under 24 preferring to stick to a single airline’s inventory.

Subscription-Based Travel Solutions

In response to the growing demand for flexibility, subscription-based travel models are emerging as a viable solution. These models offer a range of benefits that cater to the needs of modern travelers, such as the ability to cancel flights for any reason, freeze prices while confirming travel plans, and share subscription perks with friends and family.
