Forty-one years ago, Cherie Johnson and Soleil Moon Frye were strangers to both each other and the intense world of child television stars. The pair met at just 8 years old at the first taping of the of the iconic ’80s TV show, Punky Brewster.
They portrayed best friends on the show, and their on set chemistry was magic. The show was an instant success, and before long, Punky Brewster and her on-screen best friend Cherie Johnson were household names.
But the friendship didn’t end on screen. It has spanned for decades- long after the last episode aired in 1988. Actress Cherie Johnson recently shared a TikTok to let us know just how close the two actually are.

“It’s the Punky-Cherie life, and I’m so grateful.”
In the clip, Johnson shares a couple of sweet stories of times when Moon Frye demonstrated top-tier best friend loyalty:
- Johnson’s initial contract for the show reboot was for 7 of 10 total episodes. This did not fly with Moon Frye, who demanded she be on for all 10 without hesitation.
- At a recent Comic Con appearance, Moon Frye declared that they would enter the event together rather than separately, with Johnson preceding the Punky Brewster actress.
“That’s who she is. That’s how you leverage your power. That’s how you use your stardom… for good.”
Fans couldn’t agree more. Moon Frye has been complimented for being genuine, authentic, and a ‘real one.’ One fan shared her enthusiasm for strong female friendships by saying, “You & Soleil still being best friends, in real life to this day, warms my 80’s girl heart! ❤️Thanks for sharing!”
Another added, “Wait! They’re best friends in real life???” Others echoed that same sentiment and were stunned to learn how close they are.

Hearing this account of true friendship is delighting a generation of ’80s kids across the country. “Punky and Cherie were my first best friends,” one commenter shared.
