A magical ice walk sparkles along this waterfall trail near Calgary

13 November 20252 Mins Read

Johnston Canyon is one of the most coveted waterfall hikes in Alberta. It’s a well-known destination to Calgarians that transforms into a glittering tapestry of ice in the winter months.

It’s also an unforgettable experience that every visitor to Banff National Park should try at least once.

If you’re on the lookout for dazzling frozen waterfall displays, this nearby hike is for you.

You’ll traverse steel catwalks built into Johnston Canyon and travel past frozen waterfall surges that gush out from the surrounding rock walls.

What to expect

During the summer months, seven waterfalls can be seen on the hike throughout Johnston Canyon.

And in winter, those same rushing waterfalls freeze and form incredible natural ice formations along the canyon.

During this well-maintained walk, you’ll see glittering icicles and gigantic caves, full of brilliant blue ice. The trail takes you to scenic viewpoints of the Upper and Lower Falls, which look a bit different during winter’s chill.

You’ll wander through a natural cave and see cascading icicles as you gaze down at the Lower Falls.

The tower of ice at the Upper Falls is over 30 metres high, and ice climbers can be seen scaling the frozen columns that rise above your head.

You can visit the canyon for free, or take part in a walking tour with an experienced guide who will share information about the area.

This renowned natural attraction should be experienced by every visitor to Alberta at least once.

Don’t forget your warm hiking clothes, boots, ice spikes and a hot chocolate to enjoy at the end of your hike.

Or, you can book a tour with Discover Banff Tours, which includes a hotel shuttle service, hiking poles, ice cleats, hot chocolate and a maple cookie.

It’s the ultimate winter activity that speaks to the natural abundance of our province. You can’t miss out on seeing this wonder in action!

When: Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025, to April 2026
Where: Bow Valley Parkway, Improvement District No. 9, Alta.
Tickets: $120+
