Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. plans to open The Okura Resort Hakone Gora in 2029, marking its first Okura Resort property in Japan.
Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. has announced the planned opening of The Okura Resort Hakone Gora in 2029. This development marks the company’s first Okura Resort property in Japan. It is a result of a collaboration with Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd. An operational management agreement was signed on July 11, 2025, granting Nishimatsu Construction the responsibility to develop and own the property, while Hotel Okura will manage the hotel operations.
The resort will be located in Gora, a well-known area within the hot spring destination of Hakone, Japan. The location is notable for its natural environment and seasonal landscapes, attracting nearly 20 million visitors annually. The new hotel aims to cater to both domestic and international tourists who frequent the region for its hot springs, museums, and natural surroundings.
The Okura Resort Hakone Gora will comprise two wings, the West Wing and the East Wing, offering a total of 58 rooms. Each room will feature a private open-air bath utilizing water from the Owakudani Hot Spring. The average room size will be 63 square meters, including balconies. The hotel will also provide a large bathing area with an indoor hot spring bath, dry and mist saunas.
Dining facilities at the resort will include a fine-dining restaurant with a teppanyaki counter and a bar lounge in the lobby. These amenities are designed to complement the natural beauty of Gora and provide a high-quality retreat for guests.
The hotel’s design is being managed by Gwenael Nicolas of Curiosity, a Tokyo-based design studio. The concept, described as a ‘Forest Hideaway,’ aims to integrate the property with Gora’s natural environment, featuring warm green and beige color schemes and expansive windows offering views of the Hakone mountains.
The property will cover a total floor area of 9,650.84 square meters. The West Wing will have three floors above ground and three basement levels, while the East Wing will have four floors above ground. The resort is accessible via a 5-minute car ride from Gora Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway or a 3-minute walk from the Naka-Gora cable car station.
This new development is part of Hotel Okura’s strategy to expand its presence in Japan’s hospitality market, particularly in regions with high tourist appeal.
