Bundle up and explore these winter hiking trails in Edmonton

11 December 20252 Mins Read

The snow is finally packed in, and it’s time for those winter hikes and trails in Edmonton.

We’ve collected some of the best winter hikes and trails in and around Edmonton. Whether you’re a beginner, a seasoned hiker, or just a casual trail lurker, we’ve got something for everyone. These trails are also good in the summer and for year-round walking, but we recommend them this time of year.

Since the season is icy and trails can be rough, most of these trails and hikes are on paved surfaces for ease.

The best winter trails in Edmonton

Louise McKinney Riverfront Park Trail

The walk from Riverdale to Louise McKinney is an uphill walk with some great river views. It’s mostly paved, making it a good trail and loop for the wintertime, and it takes about an hour to complete.

Where: Directions

Muttart Conservatory Loop Trail

An easy trail, just adjacent to the beautiful Muttart Conservatory. This walk is short (taking about an hour), but it provides beautiful views of the establishment and the park.

Where: Directions

This is a fantastic multi-use trail, spanning around 15 kilometres and with an estimated trail time of about four hours. It gives a stunning view of not only the Rivery Valley, but the surrounding city skyline as well.

Where: Directions

Recommended for year-round walking, this trail provides a beautiful view of Beaumaris Lake, with the trail looping around it. If you’re looking to just enjoy the outdoors and take a breather, there are benches along the path.

Where: Directions

Rundle Park is filled with beautiful rolling hills, lush natural forests, man-made lakes, multi-use trails and footbridges across the river. This loop takes you through a lot of these amenities and allows you to explore the beauty of the space, even in winter.

Where: Directions

If you’re not sure where to get started, the City of Edmonton also has a map of all the cleared trails. With the map, you can see just exactly where the easiest paths are to explore.
