Netflix has secured the SVOD rights to Rebecca (stylized as REBBECA), the intimate feature documentary chronicling the life of global superstar Becky G. Following a limited theatrical engagement earlier this month, the film is scheduled to drop on Netflix, but only in the US for now, on December 31st (New Year’s Eve).
Directed by Jennifer Tiexiera and Gabriela Cavanagh, Rebecca initially premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and saw a limited theatrical release via Trafalgar Releasing on December 10 and 13. Now, Netflix subscribers will be able to ring in the new year with this “cinematic immersion” into the singer’s life.
The documentary captures a pivotal moment for the artist, born Rebbeca Marie Gomez, as she navigates the most ambitious year of her career. It focuses heavily on the creation of her debut Música Mexicana album, Esquinas, a project that prompted her to dive deep into her roots.
For those unfamiliar, the American singer, songwriter, actress, and activist was born in 1997 and is best known for songs like “Shower,” “Mayores,” and “MAMIII.” She’s also appeared in several major Hollywood movies such as Power Rangers and Blue Beetle.
According to the official synopsis, Rebecca offers a raw look at the woman behind the fame. The film follows Becky G and her family’s “powerful journey through loss, love, pain, and healing,” all while she balances the high stakes of her evolving career.
The official site describes the film as:
“A cinematic immersion into the story of Becky G — one of this generation’s most powerful voices in music. As Becky embarks on her most personal project to date… she dives deep into her roots, reliving both beautiful memories and formative moments.”
In an interview cited by Today, Becky G emphasized that this project is a departure from the polished image of a pop star.
“This film isn’t about perfection. It’s about becoming,” she said. “REBBECA was filmed in a moment of personal transition, when the questions were still louder than the answers. It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s healing.”
