Netflix is looking to close out 2025 with an international bang. The streamer has picked up the SVOD rights to the gritty Indonesian animated feature Panji Tengkorak, which is set to arrive on the platform on New Year’s Eve following its theatrical release earlier this year.
Directed by Daryl Wilson and produced by Falcon Pictures, Panji Tengkorak is an adaptation of the 1960s comic strip by Hans Jaladara. While the character has seen live-action adaptations, this 2025 iteration reimagines the story through a distinct, stylized animation format that blends 2D artistry with 3D depth. It was in the works for three years, and over 250 people were involved in its production.
The film saw a theatrical release in its home territory of Indonesia in August 2025, where it drew positive reviews. For fans of Netflix’s adult animation slate, think Blue Eye Samurai or The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, or even some of the MMA animes we’ve seen over the years.
What is the plot of Panji Tengkorak?
Set in a fictionalized version of the early 15th century, the story is a blood-soaked tale of vengeance. It centers on Panji, a warrior who has lost everything and is now cursed with immortality.
Here is the official synopsis for the film:
“Consumed by rage after the murder of his wife, Panji (Denny Sumargo) wanders the land as a tormented warrior. In a bid for revenge, he attempts to use dark magic, only to be cursed with immortality—unable to die and haunted by the very forces he sought to control.
Seeking an end to his suffering, Panji encounters Bramantya, an old master who offers a solution: retrieve the ‘Adidaya,’ a sacred heirloom stolen by the bandit Kalawereng. The mission thrusts Panji into the middle of a war between kingdoms, forcing him to confront his own inner demons.”
Who is in the voice cast?
The film features a strong lineup of recognizable names from the Indonesian film industry.
- Denny Sumargo (5 cm, A Man Called Ahok) as Panji
- Donny Damara (Lovely Man) as Bramantya
- Aghniny Haque (KKN di Desa Penari) as Gantari
