“I Hope She-Ra Will Find a New Home,” She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Creator Says as Netflix Removal Looms

You have to rewind eight years since the excellent She-Ra and the Princesses of Power first made its debut on Netflix. Serving as a reboot to the classic 1980s series with a modern look and outlook, the series has become a favorite for many and is one of dozens of titles that have come to Netflix exclusively from DreamWorks Animation Television. Its tenure on Netflix will be coming to an end, however, and the show’s creator has let their voice be heard about the upcoming removal.

The news stems from our new guide to the Netflix Originals 2026 removal guide, which we understand will include She-Ra and the Princess of Power alongside quite a number of animated kids titles from the late 2010s. The news was picked up by several other outlets, including the popular cartoon news aggregator ToonHive, where it garnered 5.8M views.

In case you missed it, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is currently set to be removed in full, that means all 5 seasons and 52 episodes, on February 21st, 2026. That removal date applies to Netflix globally. It will be departing almost six years after the fifth and final season debuted in May 2020.

There was a fair bit of confusion about why a Netflix Original could be leaving Netflix, but as we’ve been relentlessly covering, not all Netflix Originals are created equally. As we explain in our recently published guide, there are several types of Netflix Originals. In the case of She-Ra, Netflix was the exclusive distributor for a fixed period, with the underlying rights owned by another party, in this case, DreamWorks Animation (i.e., NBC Universal).

There’s precedent for Netflix Originals to be renewed, but that likely won’t be the case here, even though the show does pretty well for Netflix, with the Netflix Engagement Reports revealing it has picked up 16.3M views between the start of 2023 and mid-2025.

Responding to the news, the creator of the show (and also behind Nimona, which Netflix rescued) said:

“Unfortunately, we’ve known about this for a while, and it’s already happened to several other Dreamworks shows as their licenses with Netflix expire. Years of hard work by many talented crews have ended up without a home. We showrunners have no control over this.

I hope that She-Ra will find a new home and be released in full on DVD; I’m not sure that it will. As is often the way with queer art, our tracks are swept away behind us. Still, it happened. Watch it while you can, and keep records whenever possible. Its legacy is in your hands.”

In a final Tweet, he posted a string of emojis that let you still watch it after its Netflix departure. We won’t say it explicitly what was implied here for obvious reasons. We will say that many of the DreamWorks Animation series that have already departed haven’t found long-term new streaming homes, and while a few are available on VOD, most aren’t. They do sometimes air on linear, but most will want a single place to find episodes in the future.

Are you disappointed that She-Ra and the Princesses of Power could be leaving Netflix soon? Let us know in the comments.
