Canada has once again been named amongst the safest countries in the world. The Global Peace Index 2025 has unveiled its 19th edition, and here’s where our beloved northern gem landed on the list.
The Global Peace Index is released annually and ranks 163 countries on 23 different factors. They are all ranked according to their level of peacefulness.
“This report presents the most comprehensive data-driven analysis to date on trends in peace, its economic value, and how to develop peaceful societies,” it reads.
“It uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators to measure the state of peace across three domains: the level of Societal Safety and Security; the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and the degree of Militarisation.”
All that being said, this year’s results found that the average level of global peacefulness went down by 0.36 per cent.
This is the 13th time in the last 17 years that it has been found that the world has become less peaceful.
Despite the results, it has crowned the same country at the top of the list for the 17th time in a row. Iceland claims first place as the safest country, with Ireland placing second.
New Zealand and Austria took third and fourth place, respectively. But as for Canada, we need to look at the top 20 on the list because, unfortunately, we did not make the top 10.
Per the results, Canada took 14th place, sharing the position with Netherlands.
It saw a five-position drop since last year’s results. Nonetheless, it’s still something to be proud of.

“While Canada is the most peaceful country in the region, it also recorded the region’s largest deterioration in overall peacefulness over the past year, deteriorating by 5.8 per cent,” shares the report. “Three indicators recorded significant deteriorations: violent crime, neighbouring countries’ relations and military expenditure (% GDP).”
Despite this drop, Canada is still one of the more peaceful countries in the world, and that’s something to celebrate.
