Hear Blackfoot stories by fireside at this outdoor event in Calgary

21 January 20262 Mins Read

Since time immemorial, the Confluence has been a critical gathering place for Indigenous groups within Treaty 7 territory — including the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Tsuut’ina Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda.

Now, you can return to the Confluence in 2026 to gather and hear teachings from Indigenous Elder Francis “Butch” Wolfleg, in community with others.

The event at the Confluence will take place on Saturday, Jan. 24, offering you a chance to learn firsthand from knowledge keepers in Mohkinstsis.

It’ll be both captivating and informative — geared towards those 12+ — with an opportunity to hear and learn more about Blackfoot culture, along with Wolfleg’s own experiences. Here’s what else to expect at the captivating outdoor event.

Indigenous stories at Calgary’s oldest gathering place

Bundle up and grab a cup of cocoa for this fireside session with an Elder from the Siksika First Nation. After you find your seat, you’ll be immersed in visual, evocative tales that speak to the history and traditions of this land’s original inhabitants.

Francis “Butch” Wolfleg is from the Siksika First Nation, and he’ll lead the session by sharing stories about his life and tales from Blackfoot culture. Wolfleg is a residential school survivor and has also enjoyed an illustrious career as a broadcaster for the CFL, NHL, and WHL in the Blackfoot language.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn directly about the lives and experiences of an Indigenous Elder and share stories over the fire. Be sure to bundle up well for this outdoor event that will take place on the rolling hills of the Confluence. The program will move indoors in the event of inclement weather or unsafe temperatures (below -21 °C, including wind chill).

When: Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026
Time: 11 a.m. to noon
Where: The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland — 750 9th Ave. SE, Calgary
Tickets: $25
