'Star Trek: Voyager' Comeback Puts Fans at the Helm

25 January 20263 Mins Read

For seven seasons, Star Trek: Voyager viewers watched Captain Janeway navigate the impossible choices of the Delta Quadrant. Fans often speculated on how the journey might have changed if the crew had taken different shortcuts or if different decisions were made. Now, those “what if” scenarios can play out.

The upcoming game Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown is scheduled for release on February 19, 2026. Developed by Gamexcite and published by Daedalic Entertainment, this title shifts away from standard space combat toward a survival strategy focus. This means that every decision carries weight.

The game allows players to deviate entirely from the show’s original plot. You can choose to uphold Federation diplomacy or lean into the desperate circumstances of the mission by researching forbidden technology, such as Borg enhancements, to bolster the ship’s defenses. This level of choice (and ambiguity) definitely captures the desperate feeling of being stranded 70,000 light-years from home with no backup. It forces players to consider if the ends justify the means when the survival of the ship is on the line.

Unlike traditional flight sims, you don’t “fly” the ship yourself; instead, you act as the captain, giving specific orders to officers like Tom Paris and Tuvok via a radial menu.

Early community feedback from the demo has been notably engaged, specifically regarding the gameplay as compared to other ‘Trek’ games. ‘Very refreshing take on a Star Trek game,’ one Steam demo reviewer wrote. ‘Looking forward to the full game release!!’

On Reddit, the feedback is similarly cautiously hopeful. ‘Just beat the demo,’ one reviewer wrote. ‘Gameplay is smooth on PC, and addictive. My only issue with it, is that I wish it had voice acting. Took under an hour to beat the demo, but the time went by very fast, it sucked me right in! I went from being cautiously optimistic to a big fan! I will be buying it day 1. I chose to use the array instead of destroying it, to see what it would have been like.’

Gameplay involves a balance of technical strategy and management. You are responsible for everything from life support systems to energy distribution across the ship’s power grid. In combat, positioning is vital. You must maneuver Voyager to protect weakened shield facings while maintaining a line of sight for your own weapons. Success often depends on timing ‘Hero Abilities,’ such as having Harry Kim hack enemy shield frequencies just as Tuvok unleashes a double phaser shot.

The game will be available on PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or the Nintendo Switch 2. If you give it a try, just remeber; no grumbling that the captain hasn’t gotten you home yet. Because the captain is you.
