Release date, filming details, and everything else we know

The second season of Fallout has come to a close, but the story of Lucy (Ella Purnell), The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), and the rest of the Wastelanders is far from over. The final episode of Fallout season 2 delivered some surprising answers, but more importantly, it set up a series of questions about what’s coming next.

There will be plenty of time for probing plot questions, theories about the future of New Vegas, and long discussions about how Thaddeus (Johnny Pemberton) is the most important character in the show over the next several months. Right now, what we’re most concerned with is what has been confirmed about Fallout season 3 so far.

Production hasn’t begun yet, so details are slim. However, with season 2 behind us, we’re rounding up all the details we have on what’s next for Fallout and when you should expect to see it.

Is Fallout season 3 confirmed?

Rest assured that Amazon renewed Fallout for season 3 quite a while ago. Back in May 2025, the company announced Fallout would continue beyond the just-finished second season. As for how long it could go on, Maximus actor Aaron Moten previously said he was pitched on a five- or six-season arc for his character.

What will the plot of Fallout season 3 be about?

To sum it up, though:

• Lucy and Maximus are reunited headed into season 3
• The Ghoul’s journey to find his family continues as he heads toward Colorado and the Enclave (though he may get sidetracked).
• Stephanie — the one-eyed Canadian overseer of Vault 32 — is Hank’s pre-war wife, and they are both connected to the Enclave. She directs the Enclave to initiate “phase two,” but we don’t know what that means.
• Hank triggered a bunch of mind control devices across the wasteland, including his own, wiping his mind.
• War is coming to New Vegas as a reunited Caesar’s Legion (led by Macaulay Culkin’s Caesar) marches into battle against the New California Republic for control of New Vegas.

Where and when will filming for Fallout season 3 begin?

Currently, the third season of Fallout is in pre-production. According to a posting from the Film & Television Industry Alliance, filming for season 3 will begin on May 1. Production will return to California, after moving there for season 2. Filming is set to kick off in the city of Santa Clarita, which also served as a base for filming much of season 2. It remains to be seen if the New Vegas Strip set — originally constructed in North Hollywood, Ca. — will also serve as a filming location.

Who is directing Fallout season 3?

The production listing notes the return of Frederick E.O. Toye as director. Toye, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, previously directed five episodes of Fallout, including the season 2 premiere and finale. While he won’t direct the entire season, it sounds like Toye is a lock to help the premiere.

How many episodes will Fallout season 3 consist of?

Currently, an episode count for the third season has not been announced. However, thus far the show has been following an eight-episode format across the first two seasons. Logic would dictate that season 3 would come in with the same number of episodes. Then again, it’s not uncommon for streaming shows to change their episode counts during their run. Stranger Things alternated between eight and nine episodes per season, while the second season of The Last of Us had two fewer episodes than the first.

When will Fallout season 3 be released?

A release date for the third season of Fallout has been announced. However, the gap between seasons 1 and 2 was less than two years, making it very likely that we will see the show return in late 2027.
