‘The Åre Murders’ Will Return for Season 2 on Netflix in 2026 as Production Begins

Based on Viveca Sten’s best-selling crime novels, the Swedish series premiered on Netflix in February 2025 and quickly found an audience around the globe. Praised for its atmospheric “frozen noir” setting and complex character dynamics, it was well received, but it took some time to get an official renewal.

• The Netflix Engagement Report suggests that it reached 32.6M views in the first half of 2025 and an additional 4.6M in the second half of the year.

Yes, The Åre Murders is officially returning. The renewal of The Åre Murders was quietly confirmed by Netflix’s Nordic social media accounts late last year with the Instagram post stating: “The Åre Murders season 2 returns with two new cases for Hanna and Daniel ❄️ coming in 2026.”

Reports from Swedish outlet MovieZine and other local sources confirmed that Netflix was pleased with the “global breakout” status of the first season, which drew millions of viewers who resonated with the snowy, small-town mystery format.

Production Status & Release Date Estimates

Season 2 was reportedly scheduled to begin as early as January 2026, which makes sense given the show’s snowy exteriors. Netflix Nordic’s social media accounts once again confirmed filming was underway on February 4th, 2026. 

Carla Sehn and Kardo Razzazi, who play Hanna and Daniel respectively, said in the video: “Hello everyone. We’re here in minus 31 degrees and have begun the production of The Are Murders season 2, and we promise season 2 will be just as exciting [as season 1] – see you soon!”

When will Season 2 be on Netflix? With cameras rolling in early 2026, post-production will likely take the series into the latter half of the year. However, Nordic crime series often aim for release windows that match their setting.  We are currently estimating a Late 2026 or Early 2027 release.

What will Season 2 be about? (Book Spoilers)

Season 1 covered the first two books in Viveca Sten’s The Åre Murders series: Hidden in Snow and Hidden in Shadows.

Netflix has teased that Season 2 will feature “two new cases,” suggesting they will continue the format of adapting the novels directly. If they follow the publication order, Season 2 will likely adapt:

• Book 3: Hidden in Memories (Dalskuggan) – This story typically involves a murder at the luxurious Copperhill Mountain Lodge just before Easter. It digs deep into the history of the local mountain resorts and forces Daniel to confront anger management issues while Hanna battles her own emotional demons.
• Book 4: Hidden in Lies (Vilseledaren) or Book 5: Hidden in Mercy (Botgöraren) – Depending on the episode count, they may tackle the subsequent books which deal with everything from skeletal remains found in ski lifts to darker secrets of the Swedish elite.
