Decoding The ‘Wednesday’ Season 3 Casting Video; What Do The Letters Mean?

Production on Wednesday Season 3 is underway in Ireland, and Netflix has dropped a cryptic, clue-filled casting teaser alongside its major new cast announcements.

Before we dive down the rabbit hole of fan theories, let’s quickly recap the massive casting shake-ups that were just announced for the upcoming season.

First, we have a massive Beetlejuice reunion on our hands, with Winona Ryder joining the cast in a guest role as Tabitha. She’s joined by the previously announced Eva Green (Penny Dreadful), who will play Ophelia, the long-lost sister of Catherine Zeta-Jones’s Morticia. Also joining the ensemble are veteran actor Chris Sarandon (The Princess Bride), Noah Taylor (Peaky Blinders), Oscar Morgan (Gotham Knights), and newcomer Kennedy Moyer.

To celebrate the start of production, Netflix released a mysterious “welcome feast” teaser announcing the new cast members. True to form for the Addams family, this dinner table was packed with clues, easter eggs, and sinister foreshadowing. Fans over on the Wednesday subreddits have been dissecting every frame.

Here is a breakdown of the biggest clues and theories from the Season 3 casting trailer.

Welcome to the Addams Murder Party

The teaser frames the cast announcements around an elaborate dinner party hosted by the Addams family. But as eagle-eyed fans have pinpointed, it looks like a full-on Murder Mystery game.

Fans noticed that Eva Green’s character, Ophelia, doesn’t have a standard seating card. Instead, her name is attached to a bleeding cake with a knife stabbed directly into it. Is Ophelia the “victim” of this staged murder party? Or is this foreshadowing a much darker fate for Morticia’s sister?

What Do the Letters Mean?

At the table, each character’s seating card is accompanied by a letter, which fans believe corresponds to their clan, school, or allegiance in this twisted game:

  • A = Addams
    • Wednesday, Morticia & Gomez, Pugsley, Grandmama, Thing, Uncle Fester
  • F = Frump (The maiden name of Grandmama and Morticia)
  • N = Nevermore Academy
    • Bianca, Ajax, Eugene, Agnes, Enid (on fire), Capri,
  • Sheriff Star = Law Enforcement

But things get tricky with the other letters. Many of the new cast members have a “B” on their cards. Fans are theorizing this could be a brand new antagonist group, a rival outcast school, or a new family (perhaps the Balthazars, a nod to older Addams lore). Ryder’s role, Tabitha, was featured here in an egg-cup alongside two other cups. Cyrus, Daisy, and Atticus also featured the B’s.

Meanwhile, Tyler Galpin’s card features either an “O” (for Outcast) or a “0” (Zero). A zero could symbolize a clean slate as Tyler navigates his complicated Hyde identity outside the control of a master.

Chris Sarandon’s casting is also tied to a champagne bottle labeled “Balthazar” alongside another bottle a giant question mark on it. Could Sarandon be playing Gomez’s deceased cousin from the original 1960s sitcom, returning as a spirit guide for one of the psychics?

Why is Enid’s Name Tag on Fire?

One of the most concerning moments in the teaser is a shot of Emma Myers’s name tag (Enid Sinclair) actively burning to a crisp.

Given Enid’s transformation into a fully-fledged werewolf at the end of Season 2, some fans are worried and speculating hard about what this fire represents. Some theorize that being trapped in her alpha wolf form will deeply change her, causing her to lose her grip on her humanity. Others think the fire symbolizes a “phoenix rebirth” where the old Enid is burned away to make room for a fiercer, more dangerous alpha.

What did you spot in the Wednesday Season 3 teaser? Are you worried about Enid’s burning name tag? Let us know your wildest theories in the comments below!
