While regular shampoo is for maintenance, clarifying shampoo is for a reset,” Rogerio Cavalcante, expert stylist and founder of Brazil Edition tells Parade. Temur, premier hair colorist and stylist in Manhattan, gets more technical about how it works. “A clarifying shampoo is designed to deeply cleanse the hair and scalp, removing buildup from oils, styling products, hard water minerals and environmental pollutants that regular shampoos may leave behind,” he says. “It uses stronger or more concentrated cleansing agents than everyday shampoos, which makes it effective for resetting the hair—but this means it is also more drying if overused.”

Ladosha Wright, trichologist and RevAir’s resident expert, explains the science behind the deep clean: “The magic of clarifying shampoos takes place in the bottle by way of ingredients. Many clarifying shampoos have more surfactants, which have effective scrubbing-like actions on heavier, waxier and stickier products,” she notes.

“If your hair feels heavy or kind of coated, your usual products aren’t doing much anymore, your scalp gets oily really fast, your curls won’t behave or your color just looks a little blah—those are all signs it’s time to clarify,” Cavalcante says.

“Common signs include hair feeling heavy, greasy or coated even after washing, lack of volume, dullness, curls losing their shape, color appearing less vibrant or scalp issues such as itchiness or flakes caused by buildup. If hair no longer responds well to styling products, that is also a strong indicator,” Katie Brenner,Oli G global artistic director and hairstylist, tells Parade.

Monique McMahon, founder of Que Colour and pro ambassador for Christophe Robin, adds that blonde hair specifically benefits from clarifying. “A clarifying shampoo will stop your blonde from looking brassy. Blonde hair is very porous and more likely absorb pollution and products like spray tan,” she notes.

Cavalcante offers specific guidelines based on lifestyle, recommending:

Most people: every one to three weeks
Heavy product users or swimmers: weekly

“This depends on your hair type as well as the formula you’re using,” Temur explains. “In general, clarifying shampoo can be used once every one to four weeks. If you have very dry or curly hair, use it a little less frequently (maximum once per month), since clarifying shampoos can be drying to the hair.”

“Our hair washing routine is very similar to our face cleansing routine.
