Vancouver Island is a paradise for beach lovers, and we are’t just talking about Tofino and Ucluelet. In fact, just a quick 20-minute drive from the Nanaimo ferry terminal is a beautiful seaside town that just might steal your heart this spring or summer.
The quaint small town boasts scenic views, warm waters, and a “Mediterranean-like climate” that’s to die for.
“Our Mediterranean-like climate brings dry, sunny summers and mild winters, perfect for exploring all year,” says Tourism Ladysmith. “We’re also known for straddling the 49th Parallel that divides Canada and the U.S.”
The turn-of-the-century town is a highly sought-after place to live, work, and play, tucked away in the dreamy hillsides of the Cowichan Valley. Its first inhabitants were the people of the Stz’uminus First Nation, who have used the Ladysmith Harbour as a rich source of fish and shellfish for thousands of years.
Today, the Stz’uminus people continue to practice many aspects of their traditional lifestyle and are working with the Town of Ladysmith to restore the Harbour to its original glory.
Visitors can take a Harbour Tour or go straight for a dip or kayak journey in the Salish Sea.
Its beaches are rocky but easy to explore, whether you’re wearing closed-toe shoes or flip-flops. Transfer Beach Park, in particular, is a peaceful place to soak up the sun and the views, with plenty of grassy areas to set up your picnic blanket on.
One of “Canada’s Great Streets”

At the heart of the small town is First Avenue, which is known as one of Canada’s Great Streets. It combines Edwardian buildings with industrial-era artifacts and modern-day boutiques and parks, making it all the more fascinating to stroll down.

Take in the ocean views from Harbourview Park, Queen’s Park, or Harmony Square. Or head straight to the seaside Transfer Beach Park for a swim, paddle, or kayak adventure.
If you visit during the warmer months, there’s a strong chance you’ll be able to catch a live music event while you’re there at the park’s giant amphitheatre.
So if you haven’t yet explored the area (or even if you have), it’s worth adding Ladysmith to your itinerary the next time you’re on Vancouver Island North.
Happy exploring!
How to get there: Take a ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo and drive 23 minutes via the Trans-Canada Highway/BC-1 S.
