Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake confirmed by Ubisoft

4 March 20262 Mins Read

In a wide-ranging update on Assassin’s Creed from the franchise’s new head of content, Ubisoft confirmed Wednesday that the long-rumored Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remake is real. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced is coming, Ubisoft confirmed, but did not go into details about what the project will entail.

In an update titled Assassin’s Creed: Into 2026, franchise head of content Jean Guesdon said, “Speculation around Assassin’s Creed is not new, but it’s worth repeating: ‘Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.’ Well, except in this case, some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your spyglass on the horizon.”

Guesdon included a piece of artwork for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, showing the game’s protagonist, Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, standing on a sail. A logo watermark confirms the remake’s new title.

The Resynced title was spoiled in December, when a listing for the game appeared on the website of the European ratings board PEGI. While that listing has since been pulled, the listing noted that the game was rated PEGI 18 (not suitable for players under 18) due to violence, bad language, and in-game purchases.

Of those three, in-game purchases stands out as a curiosity. The original Black Flag, which was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox One, did not offer in-game purchases. The most recent game in the franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, offers cosmetics for sale using its in-game currency, Helix Points, which can be purchased. Perhaps a similar feature is being added to Black Flag. There’s another more exciting option: The original Black Flag received an add-on, Freedom Cry, as downloadable content.

Whatever the case, Black Flag fans can rest easy knowing that the remake has finally been made official and that a release seems imminent. Currently, the original version of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag can be played on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X via backward compatibility, thanks to versions released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
