Beloved '90s Singer, With No. 1 Hit Song, Turns 58

12 March 20262 Mins Read

The 1990s had countless talented artists, but few stood out quite like the iconic Lisa Loeb.

An acoustic song, a pair of signature glasses, and an unforgettable voice helped her become one of the most recognizable singer-songwriters of the era. The beloved star, best known for her No. 1 hit “Stay (I Missed You),” is celebrating her 58th birthdayWednesday.

Loeb was born on March 11, 1968, in Bethesda, Maryland, and grew up in Dallas, Texas. She developed a passion for music early on and studied music theory at Brown University, where she began writing songs and performing with other students. After graduating, she moved to New York City to pursue music professionally.

Her breakthrough came in 1994 with the single “Stay (I Missed You),” which was featured in the film Reality Bites. The song soared in popularity and quickly reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Loeb famously became the first artist to top the chart without being signed to a record label, an achievement that made the moment even more remarkable.

Reflecting on the song’s success, Loeb said in an interview with the Niagara Falls Review, “I’d worked so hard up to that point, made so many connections in the music business, so many things about to happen, and that just kicked it into full speed.”

Following that success, Loeb released her debut album Tails in 1995, which included her hit single and helped solidify her role as one of the decade’s prominent singer-songwriters. She continued releasing music throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, building a diverse career across several genres and audiences.

Beyond her work as a pop-rock artist, Loeb has since found success in children’s music. Her album Feel What U Feel won the Grammy Award for Best Children’s Album in 2018, according to her biography. These achievements highlight the singer’s versatility and ability to connect with listeners of all ages.

More than three decades after her breakthrough, Loeb remains active in music, touring, recording, and appearing in television and film projects. She has also used her success to become an active philanthropist. Her enduring career and instantly recognizable hit continue to make her an iconic symbol of ’90s music.
