Beloved '80s Singer-Songwriter, With Twelve No. 1 Hit Songs, Turns 71

17 March 20264 Mins Read

In the 1980s and 1990s, many country songs rose to the top of the charts and left a lasting impression on listeners. Paul Overstreet, the singer behind the No. 1 country single “Daddy’s Come Around” and the writer behind many of our favorite country tunes, turned 71 on Tuesday.

The American singer and songwriter began his music career at RCA Records Nashville when he released his self-titled debut album in 1982. Overstreet was briefly in the trio S-K-O with Thom Schuyler and J. Fred Knobloch before resuming his solo career. Between 1989 and 1992, he released three studio albums: Sowin’ Love, Heroes and Love is Strong, which included the hit single, “Daddy’s Come Around.”

“Daddy’s Come Around” was released in November 1990 as the lead single for the singer’s third studio album, Heroes.

The song, co-written by Overstreet and Don Schlitz, is told from the perspective of a little boy who sings about his father’s wild upbringing and how he used to go out at night with his friends, instead of staying home and helping around the house. One night, the mother lost patience and changed the front door locks, giving the father an ultimatum: change his ways or leave for good. At the end of the song, the father changes his ways and starts to learn how to be a good dad.

Overstreet also has had success as a songwriter, primarily in the country genre. He has written or co-written 27 Top Ten songs, as well as won two Grammy Awards, multiple ACMs and a CMA Song of the Year Award. He has worked with many of the biggest country stars over the past three decades, including Kenny Chesney, Michael Marin Murphey, The Judds, Randy Travis, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley and more.

In an interview with Songwriter Universe back in 2022, Overstreet revealed that he was writing songs (or at least, trying to) since he was a little boy.

“It seemed like before I could go to school, I was at home with my mom all day and all the other kids were in school….I would hear all these songs on country radio, and I always felt like I knew some of the lines they were going to say next just because of the rhyming,” he admitted. “I think through the years, I learned from a lot of other writers. I learned a different craft of molding a lyric into a song and saying something that’s meaningful, and putting those words with a melody that causes people to listen.”

His No. 1 hits that he is credited in are “I Fell in Love Again Last Night” and “You Again” by the Forester Sisters, Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing At All,” “Some Beach” by Blake Shelton, the signature song “Love Can Build a Bridge” by the Judds, and four songs for Randy Travis. While he was in S-K-O, their song “Baby’s Got a New Baby” gave them the trio’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot Country Songs. In addition, his collaboration with Tanya Tucker on the song “I Won’t Take Less Than You Love” gave Overstreet his second No. 1 song. “Daddy Came Around” is the only song of his to become a No. 1 country hit as a solo artist, but it remained on the country chart for 18 weeks.

“When you first start out, you don’t realize how important it can be to people,” Overstreet said to Songwriter Universe. “This DJ told me one day when we were in Texas, ‘I had a truck driver call one night and he was going cross country, and he said, ‘Man, it’s a matter of life and death that you play Same Ol’ Me [by George Jones with The Oak Ridge Boys].’ He dedicated it to his girl or his wife.”
