You wouldn’t know it from the snow squalls blasting many parts of the country right now but spring arrives this Friday.
It’s a season of renewal, of neighbours re-emerging onto their streets, not just to shovel snow. For many, spring also feels like a natural time to shake off winter and tidy the nest – to clean, scrub and purge, or try to.
Depending on what you’re up against, spring cleaning can feel daunting, satisfying, maybe even cathartic. It can be an archaeological dig, a home coughing up relics from the past.
Want to get rid of your stuff but not sure how? Here are tips for clearing out your closet sustainably
I’m Zosia Bielski, The Globe’s time use reporter, and along with our audience team we’re interested in what you found along the way in your own springtime purge.
Clearing out an old office, my colleague chanced upon a clarinet – party on! In our own home, my partner set to excavating the basement one year. Running his hand along a ceiling joist criss-crossed with cobwebs, what did he find but a shotgun gauge adapter, still in its vintage paper box. The former homeowner explained that it belonged to her father, a hunter, who’d also hidden wads of cash in various corners. If that isn’t motivation for setting your house in order, I don’t know what is.
For a future story, we want to hear about the most interesting object you’ve ever come across during your seasonal clean-out. Your dad’s wedding tux with a note in the jacket pocket? A musty VHS tape from a long-forgotten family gathering? Yellowing love letters your grandparents exchanged? A doll that’s definitely haunted?
Share your story in the form below, or send us an e-mail at [email protected]. If you’d like to include a photo, submit it using this link.
