A heartbreaking and inspiring new documentary is heading to Netflix this April. The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson will explore the meteoric rise of the North American off-road cycling star and the devastating aftermath of her 2022 murder. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming feature documentary.

Produced by Unreasonable Studios, the 95-minute documentary comes from a powerhouse, award-winning creative team. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Marina Zenovich (Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, ESPN’s Lance, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not) serves as director, while Academy Award-winner Evan Hayes (Free Solo) produces. Executive producers include Ayesha Rokadia, Justin Barocas, P.G. Morgan, and Zenovich.

Behind the camera, the film features cinematography by Ben Bloodwell, editing by Greg Finton, ACE, and Poppy Das, ACE, and an original score by acclaimed composer Marco Beltrami.

Following its festival run—including a premiere at the 2026 SXSW Film & TV Festival in the Documentary Spotlight category—The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson will drop globally on Netflix on April 3, 2026.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from the documentary.

What is The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson about?

The documentary centers on Moriah “Mo” Wilson, who was widely considered one of the brightest young stars in the cycling community. Raised in Vermont in an outdoors-oriented family, Wilson was an alpine skier at Dartmouth College before moving to the West Coast to work as an engineer for Specialized Bicycles. She quickly transitioned into racing bikes locally and proved to be a remarkably versatile endurance athlete.

Shortly before her death, Wilson left her engineering job to focus entirely on racing, stringing together a series of dominant wins across cyclocross, gravel, and mountain biking, including the 2021 Big Sugar Gravel, and the 2022 Sea Otter Classic XC race and Belgian Waffle Ride.

Tragically, while in Austin, Texas, to compete at Gravel Locos in May 2022, Wilson was murdered. The crime shocked the international cycling world and sparked a weeks-long manhunt for her killer, Kaitlin Armstrong, who fled to Costa Rica before eventually being apprehended and sentenced to 90 years in prison in late 2023.

While the international manhunt and subsequent trial dominated headlines, Netflix’s documentary aims to go beyond the sensationalized true-crime elements to focus on Wilson herself and the loved ones she left behind.

Here is the official synopsis:

“An intimate, arresting portrait of cyclist Moriah Wilson—raised by a fierce, loving family—whose singular drive becomes her superpower, carrying her to athletic brilliance and, devastatingly, toward a life cut short by murder. The search for her killer made national headlines in May 2022, as did the trial that followed. This film goes beyond the headlines to explore the impact of this devastating crime on those who knew and loved Mo: her family, friends, and colleagues. What emerges is a powerful, deeply human story about loss, love, and the ways that grief can reshape lives, while also revealing moments of resilience and transformation — even in the darkest of times.”

“Every so often, when making a documentary, you become inspired beyond words, and this experience was that for me,” director Marina Zenovich said of the project (via CyclingWeekly). “I’m honoured to show the love, strength, and vulnerability that Moriah Wilson’s family and friends shared with us in telling this tragic story. They took their unimaginable grief and turned it into something deeply moving and inspiring.”
