Netflix’s Big Mistakes ends with surprising twists and big cliffhangers. We’re here to break down all the madness, give our predictions, and cover how the series sets up a season 2, although we’re currently not sure whether one will be on the way.

After enduring immense success over six seasons of Schitt’s Creek, Dan Levy is back with another scripted comedy series. Titled Big Mistakes, this show swaps out the heartfelt nature of his previous show in favor of a more chaotic family affair, in which two completely incapable siblings — community pastor Nicky (Levy) and school teacher Morgan (Taylor Ortega) — find themselves blackmailed into the world of organized crime after stealing a necklace from a local store. Out of their depths but forced to take on dangerous tasks, the duo squabble their way through the newfound duties bestowed on them by the cartel.

In our 3.5-star review, we praised Big Mistakes for delivering plenty of laughs and a fun plot, but noted that it falls short of Levy’s other fan-favorite drama, Schitt’s Creek.

Big Mistakes Ending Explained: What are the big twists?

Warning: The following section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution!

While chock-full of cartel action, the ending of Big Mistakes leaves the story wide open for continuation. Rather than reaching a proper conclusion, it drops big twists and ends on a cliffhanger.

Throughout the season, both Morgan and Nicky keep getting pulled into different missions from various people. With each quest, it seems the person they’re working for has someone above them pulling the strings. It starts with Yusuf (Boran Kuzum). And then Ivan (Mark Ivanir) gets involved, and they inadvertently find themselves at odds with the Italian mob.

During an eventful trip to Florida, Morgan and Nicky found themselves caught in the middle of a cartel slaughter, in which Ivan and his crew are killed in the midst of trying to work a deal. Returning home, and keen to get their lives back on track, they ignore the calls from their cartel ‘work’ phones, and gather to celebrate their mother Linda’s (Laurie Metfalf) successful mayoral campaign. Well, to call it successful would be inaccurate. The election was an ultimate draw, and rather than settle the tie by a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, her competitor decided to step down and concede the defeat to Linda.

Meanwhile, Nicky regretfully breaks up with boyfriends Tareq (Jacob Gutierrez) to protect him after concluding that being together may put his life in danger.

While gathered for what should be a moment of family jubilation, Morgan is pulled aside by her future mother-in-law, Annette (Elizabeth Perkins), who implores Morgan to forget about her mixed feelings for her betrothed, Max (Jack Innanen), and to follow through with her marriage. Of course, this then ties Annette to the family, which now holds political power thanks to Linda’s mayoral success.

However, Annette doesn’t stop there. She then pulls out the necklace that Morgan stole earlier in the season. At that moment, Morgan puts all of the pieces together. Her future mother-in-law is the mob boss and the mastermind; both Ivan and Andrei worked for her. Turns out, the only reason both Morgan and Nicky’s lives were spared at the slaughter was because of Morgan’s relationship with Max.

Big Mistakes Season 1 feels like a beginning

Unlike a limited series, Big Mistakes ends with the expectation that the story will continue. Season 1 feels like an opening chapter, laying a solid foundation for more installments.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to see how Nicky and Morgan’s relationship develops. We’re also pondering a few questions: Will Morgan follow through with her marriage to Max? Will Nicky actually leave his post as a community pastor, like he said he would? How will Annette’s reveal as the boss of the mob operation affect how involved Morgan and Nicky get in the cartel business?

The season concludes with an awkward family photo. They’re celebrating Linda’s mayoral success, and a wedding between both Morgan and Max is on the cards.

All 8 episodes of Big Mistakes Season 1 are now streaming on Netflix.
