A Historic First on the Country Music Charts Happened 46 Years Ago Today

19 April 20262 Mins Read

On April 19, 1980—46 years ago today—country music history was made in a way that hadn’t been seen before.

For the first time ever, the top five spots on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart were all held (or co-held) by female artists, marking a major moment for the genre.

Leading the charge was “It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye” by Crystal Gayle, followed by “A Lesson in Leavin'” from Dottie West.

Debby Boone landed at No. 3 with “Are You on the Road to Lovin’ Me Again,” while Emmylou Harris claimed the No. 4 spot with “Beneath Still Waters.” Rounding out the top five was “Two Story House” by Tammy Wynette and George Jones.

At a time when country music charts were often dominated by male artists, this moment stood out as a powerful shift. Each of these songs showcased a different facet of country storytelling, from heartbreak and independence to reconciliation and resilience, highlighting the depth and versatility of female voices in the genre.

Songs Topping the Charts April 19, 1980

“It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye” captured Gayle’s, 75, signature smooth, emotional delivery, while West’s (who died in 1991) “A Lesson in Leavin'” offered a confident take on walking away from a troubled relationship.

Boone’s, 69, hit leaned into themes of love and second chances, and Harris, 79, brought her unmistakable blend of traditional and contemporary country to “Beneath Still Waters.” Meanwhile, Wynette (who died in 1998) and Jones (who died in 2013) delivered a classic duet filled with tension and longing.

A Defining Moment for Women in Country

This chart-topping sweep didn’t just reflect a single week of success. It underscored a broader shift in country music. These artists were not only charting hits but shaping the sound and storytelling of the era.

Decades later, the April 19, 1980 chart remains a landmark moment, proving that women weren’t just part of country music’s success—they were leading it.
