15 Years Later, Susan Lucci Recalls the Heartbreaking Irony of Her Final Days at ‘All My Children’

Fifteen years after ABC canceled the long-running soap All My Children, created by the legendary Agnes Nixon, Daytime Emmy winner Susan Lucci is reflecting on her experience surrounding the show’s end.

Lucci recently was interviewed by KTLA 5’s morning news, where she discussed her new book La Lucci, her work withJonah HillandKeanu Reeves on Outcome, and her memories of All My Children.

The actress was an original cast member on the ABC soap, where she portrayed the role of the troubled heroine Erica Kane.

Lucci recalled that in the weeks leading up to the cancellation, she was spending time connecting with fans. “I was on the book tour for my first memoir 15 years ago. I had been so amazed by these passionate fans, lining up early in the morning,” she said.

Her comments came after the series had relocated production from New York City to Los Angeles in December 2009, a move that marked a major shift for the show.

“I went back to the studio and gave this pep talk to the crew and said ‘no were good, the fans are out there,’” Lucci recalled. “And suddenly we were canceled.”

On April 14, 2011, ABC announced that after 41 years, All My Children, along with its sister soap One Life to Live, would be cancelled. The series finale aired on September 23, 2011.

Two years later, the series was revived by Prospect Park for a streaming run on Hulu. While several original cast members returned, Lucci did not reprise her role.

However the reboot was short-lived, ending after just 43 episodes.

Since then, fans have continued to call for a revival. Earlier this year, Kelly Ripaannounced that she and her husband Mark Consuelos are developing a potential All My Children project for Lifetime, including two made-for-tv movies. Lucci indicated that she would be open to returning to the franchise and reprising her role as Erica Kane once again.

La Lucci, Susan Lucci’s second memoir is available now.
