Magic: The Gathering’s previously leaked Secret Lair Commander Deck, Goblin Storm, now has a release date.
The not-so-secret 100-card precon, which features new artwork from big Goblin fan Wizard of Barge, will debut on May 18 directly from Secret Lair’s storefront, with players able to register their interest on the site today.
“Secret Lair has been long known for its love of meteorological phenomena, and to answer the timeless philosophical question, ‘How many Goblins can I accumulate after I storm off to bash my opponents’ face in?’” Secret Lair Principal Product Lead Steve Sunu said in a press release. “If you understood any of that last sentence, this is the deck for you! We tasked Wizards of the Coast’s best designers and asked one of Secret Lair’s fan-favorite artists — and longtime Goblin enjoyer — to help us help you develop your own answer to that question.”
Your purchase includes the deck, with fresh art on 12 new Foil borderless cards, 22 borderless Mountains, and 3 other non-foil reprints, alongside 63 non-foil reprints with existing art.
You’ll also get a deck box, foil Goblin tokens, non-foil double-sided tokens, a Storm Counter, and a display Commander card for Zada, Hedron Grinder.
Still, what about the value included? Well, it’s pretty solid, actually. Zada is a cheap card, sure, but don’t let that fool you. Roaming Throne can cost as much as $90 for the foil version, while Goblin Lackey is around $30, too.
Seething Song can be expensive, too, as well as Ruby Medallion,; Throne of Eldraine; and Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep. In fact, I dropped the decklist into Moxfield, and it told me there’s around $350 in value, but that doesn’t take into account the new card art.
While the new deck will be available for $149.99 (which is steep), if you’re keen on building a mono-red Goblin deck that’s packed with some really cool artwork, it’s hard to argue with that kind of value.
Honestly, I’ve been defeated by Krenko and company more times than I’d care to admit, so this strikes me as a nice deck to pick up. Plus, Roaming Throne is kind of great for any typal deck.
