Do Dante and Vergil Stop the End of the World?

Well, that was certainly a big finale. We had a battle across Earth and hell, two colossal monsters fighting, a big decision from Vergil, and a huge reveal that sets up season 3. Let’s break down what happened at the end of Devil May Cry season 2 and what it means for the future of the Netflix adaptation.

The Road to the Finale: Dante and Vergil

Most of season one was split in two. One half focused on Dante being tasked by the shadowy corporation DARKCOM to help kill the king of hell, Mundus, while also searching for his long-lost brother, Vergil. Then we have Vergil’s story, a quest for vengeance as he hunts down those responsible for the death of his mother. Both brothers spend the season on a collision path, engaged in opposite sides of a conflict that’s not really what they believe it to be.

Makai’s History Explained

Throughout the season we also learn a lot about the history of Makai. The finale reveals how Dante and Vergil’s father, Sparda, helped free Makai from its previous despot and why he then abandoned hell and went to Earth after a big fight with his former friend, Mundus. Devil May Cry is more than just a show with cool demon fights, as it is also a not-at-all subtle allegory for post-9/11 paranoia and the Iraq War. The war between Earth and hell is but an excuse by a group of megalomaniac fanatics to gain power, and it comes to a head in the finale.

Argus, Argosax, and the Rift to Hell

Argus, the leader of the Uroboros Corporation, was revealed to have been seeking immortality for centuries with the help of the previous ruler of hell, Argosax. In the final two episodes, Argus frees Argosax and fuses with him, gaining incredible power. But before he gets to destroy Earth, Dante and Vergil open a rift to hell and push Argus through, hoping Mundus can beat Argosax once more.

Vergil’s Ultimate Choice and Confrontation with Mundus

Just like their first time around, Mundus manages to kill Argosax without much effort, but that still leaves one giant and powerful demon around — and also a massive portal Mundus’ entire army can use to invade Earth. While Dante rushes to close the rift, Vergil takes the chance to confront Mundus about the death of his mother. The king of hell doesn’t even deny it, but instead tries to justify his ordering of Eva’s death to stop her from influencing the two brothers, and confesses he lied to Vergil in order to make him his finest warrior.

In the ensuing fight, Vergil decides to push Dante through the rift together with his father’s sword, effectively sealing the rift behind him. He then battles Mundus for control of Makai, deciding that hell is his home now, and he will lead them in a future invasion against Earth.

Does Vergil Die in the Season 2 Finale?

Does Vergil die? We don’t know, really.

Last we see of him, he’s fighting Mundus, a rather formidable opponent that not even Vergil’s father could defeat. Before we find out who wins the fight, however, we cut to Earth, where Dante falls from an incredible height and starts reminiscing about his childhood memories of Vergil. Meanwhile, Lady goes on the hunt for the man who killed her mother. She also discovers footage from DARKCOM that shows her father is still alive, and he’s actually the demon jester that’s been playing double agent inside Mundus’ court all season long.

What This Means for Devil May Cry Season 3

So we are left with the promise of another bitter, heartbreaking reunion for season 3.

How will Lady react to her father’s new form and role in Makai? Does Vergil actually win against Mundus, and will he invade Earth? Adi Shankar recently told us he has the story of Devil May Cry figured out for the next 10 years or so, if Netflix lets him do it. Whatever happens next, it will definitely be emotional and scored to a rocking soundtrack.
