The Boroughs proves to be a worthy Stranger Things successor with big first week on Netflix

27 May 20262 Mins Read

The Boroughs, a sci-fi horror series following a group of elderly retirees who team up to take on a sinister threat in their retirement village of the same name, ended with a cliffhanger finale that made us say one thing: More! As it turns out, we’re not the only ones.

While the series wasn’t able to claim the No.1 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 this week, the Duffer Brothers-produced show stood tall at No.2 with 5.6 million views. While Netflix measured metrics differently at the time of Stranger Things’ first-season debut in 2016, Business Insider reports it quickly became one of the biggest hits on the streaming service. It earned 8.2 million views in the first 16 days of its launch, surpassing juggernauts like Jessica Jones, House of Cards, and Daredevil.

With a little under 6 million views, The Boroughs hasn’t quite hit Stranger Things numbers — but it’s certainly resonating with Netflix viewers.

It no doubt helps to have a star-studded cast, with big-name actors like Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman all involved. One of The Boroughs‘s biggest strengths was the cast’s electric chemistry with one another, combining experience and wisdom with a camaraderie that felt as tight-knit and wonderful as when the Stranger Things kids came together for the first time.

With the first season done and dusted, it’s still uncertain whether The Boroughs will get a second season or not. From how it ended, however, it’s clear that showrunners Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews have more story to tell.

“We knew how long we wanted the show to run, what we wanted to say about it,” Matthews told Polygon in a video interview. “So we want to do more. Let’s just see if we get to.”

The Boroughs is available to stream now on Netflix.
