Calgary has a hidden garden with over 4,000 plant varieties to explore

27 May 20263 Mins Read

It’s not every day you find a hillside garden tucked in the middle of Calgary, but the Reader Rock Garden somehow feels like its own little world. Located just outside downtown, the historic garden is packed with stunning flowers, winding pathways, and thousands of plantings that make it feel straight out of a fairy tale.

A garden built from one man’s vision

The Reader Rock Garden dates back to the early 1900’s and, according to the City of Calgary, was created by Williams Roland Reader, Calgary’s Superintendent of Parks from 1913 to 1942.

It started as a plain hillside near his home and slowly transformed into one of the most unique gardens in Western Canada. According to the City, Reader spent decades collecting plants and seeds from around the world and experimenting to determine which would survive Calgary’s unpredictable climate. During this time, it was quite common for gardeners to collect alpine plants on their travels and create gardens as living artifacts of their journeys.

Over 30 years, Reader trialled over 4,000 different plant species, and the garden was completed by the end of the 1920s.

After it was finished, Reader continued to collect and experiment with plant material until he died in 1943. One year later, the park was named in his honour.

Still blooming, still hidden

Today, the garden stands as one of Calgary’s most peaceful hidden escapes, used by locals as a quiet walking spot, a backdrop for photos, and a place for a coffee break.

Throughout the space, you’ll find stone paths that wind through beautiful flower beds, along with small bridges and tucked-away benches that truly make you forget you’re in the middle of the city.

Visitors can now also enter Reader’s former home, which is now a café overlooking the gardens.

And while the garden has undergone many restorations over the years, much of its original character remains intact.

Plan your visit

One of the best parts about this garden is that it’s completely free to visit, so definitely think about stopping by this summer, when everything is in full bloom.

Throughout the space, there are super accessible, wheelchair-friendly walking paths, making it the perfect spot for a family day trip. But it’s important to note that pets are not permitted in the garden; this measure is in place to help preserve the plant life.

Since the pathways can be a bit narrow, group sizes are encouraged to stay small, with a recommended limit of around 15 people.

The Reader Rock Garden stands out not just for its stunning views but also for the rich history that has shaped it over the past century. What started as one man’s experiment in growing plants from around the world has turned into one of Calgary’s most recognized gardens.

So next time you’re looking for a quiet escape in the city, it’s worth taking a little gander through Reader Rock Garden and seeing all the history that’s tucked away in the middle of Calgary.

When: Open year-round
Time: Open 24 hours
Where: 325 25th Ave. SE, Calgary, Alta.
