Disney World Is Giving This Fan-Favorite Resort Its First-Ever Major Room Makeover

2 June 20265 Mins Read

If you’ve ever booked a stay at Walt Disney World with little ones in tow, there is a very good chance you have spent some time exploring the larger-than-life character courtyards at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. Since it first opened its doors back in 2012, the property has reigned supreme as a top choice for families, thanks to its immersive storytelling environments and spacious family suites. However, while the resort’s exterior icons have kept their signature pop over the years, the actual guest rooms have spent nearly a decade and a half waiting for a truly deep, structural transformation.

That is all about to change. Walt Disney World leadership recently revealed that Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is officially scheduled for a massive, top-to-bottom room reimagining set to kick off in the summer of 2027.

This major project represents the very first full-scale “hard goods” refurbishment for the property since its grand opening 14 years ago. The extensive overhaul follows closely on the heels of similar modern upgrades at Disney’s Pop Century Resort and the All-Star Resorts, effectively completing a total transformation across Disney’s entire Value Resort category.

A Massive Behind-the-Scenes Investment

Maintaining the immersive environments across a sprawling theme park ecosystem requires an astonishing amount of logistical coordination and continuous investment. During a recent Disney media event, resort leadership shed light on the sheer scale of the operation, detailing how the company actively reinvests hundreds of millions of dollars each year back into the infrastructure of both the theme parks and the resorts to ensure the guest experience never misses a beat.

It turns out it takes a literal village to keep everything running seamlessly. Outside of the traditional Walt Disney Imagineering teams, Walt Disney World employs a massive network of more than 4,000 dedicated Cast Members representing 15 different specialized trades. This massive workforce is entirely dedicated to the daily upkeep, painting, repair and systematic refreshing of the parks and hotels—and the upcoming Art of Animation renovation is stepping into the spotlight as a prime example of that ongoing commitment.

The Game-Changing Upgrade Coming to Standard Rooms

While the multi-room Family Suites are a massive draw for larger groups, budget-conscious travelers and smaller families frequently look to the resort’s standard accommodations: the ultra-popular, Ariel-themed Little Mermaid rooms. While these spaces received a light “soft goods” refresh between 2019 and 2021 to swap out old carpeting for smooth laminate flooring and upgrade standard beds to queens, the underlying furniture and room layouts have remained unchanged since 2012.

Industry insiders who caught an early sneak peek at the upcoming 2027 concepts are already calling the new designs a monumental upgrade, specifically because they are introducing the brilliant, space-saving layout popularized by Pop Century.

The major structural win here is the addition of the innovative pull-down Murphy bed that seamlessly folds up into the wall to reveal a fully functional dining table during the day. This single design tweak instantly makes the compact standard rooms feel twice as large, giving families plenty of floor space to move around, unpack, and prep for the parks without tripping over extra furniture.

The new aesthetic is also expected to lean into a more polished, sophisticated balance—moving away from the slightly basic plastic cutouts of the original 2012 build and trading them for a clever mix of vibrant Disney whimsy and adult-friendly design textures. Think of it as a beautiful evolution inspired by the elegant Under the Sea rooms over at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.

What This Means for Your Upcoming Vacation Plans

If you’re planning an Orlando getaway over the next couple of years, there is absolutely no need to scratch this resort off your list out of fear of heavy construction chaos. Disney is executing this transformation using a highly strategic, building-by-building phased approach. By taking just one isolated building offline at a time to complete the gut-reno before moving to the next, the hotel will remain fully open and operational throughout the timeline.

Because the construction is contained to individual structures, guests staying on the opposite side of the property will likely never even hear or see the work being done. While the official project is slated to begin in the summer of 2027, experts anticipate the rolling closures will stretch well into the second half of 2028 to fully update the entire resort.

If you want to experience the absolute freshest rooms the Value tier has to offer in the meantime, locking in a stay at the neighboring Pop Century Resort is still a stellar bet—but by the time 2028 rolls around, Art of Animation’s standard rooms are poised to become the most functional and highly coveted budget-friendly spaces on Disney property.
