For me, the most exciting reveal of the newly announced products from ROG ahead of Computex this year is definitely the ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle. It pairs the ROG Xbox Ally X20 Edition, celebrating ROG’s 20th anniversary, with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses, transforming handheld gaming into a big screen experience wherever you go.

ROG is launching a significantly refreshed handheld at a time when the competition is focused on trying to manage price increases due to hardware shortages or are just catching up on battery capacity and ergonomic design. Meanwhile instead of going tit-for-tat, ROG has changed the entire game by not only delivering on customers’ OLED ask with a new 7.4” screen, but topped it off by bundling an entirely new display technology; the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses.

First impressions

As an existing ROG Xbox Ally X user, holding the Ally X20 on the event floor felt familiar and comfortable. The overall design stays the same, but specific tweaks to the handheld device increase playability, longevity and the collectability. This first impression is one of admiration. The 20th anniversary aesthetic is striking with the gold accents and the translucent case. This brought back some pretty nostalgic memories of handhelds past (shout-out purple Game Boy colour).

The most fascinating physical innovation is the transforming D-pad, which mechanically rotates to switch between a precise four-way layout and a sweeping eight-way input — a dream feature for fighting games. The bumpers have been improved slightly to deliver more crisp tactile feedback on every press. For future-proof connectivity, the device hosts a faster microSD Express card reader alongside dual top-tier ports: USB4 (Thunderbolt 4 compatible) and USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, both fully supporting DisplayPort 2.1.

Key specs

The headline upgrade is a magnificent new 7.4-inch ROG Nebula HDR OLED display. Protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus with a premium DXC anti-reflection coating, this panel looks jaw-droppingly vibrant even under harsh lighting in the event space. It runs at 120Hz with FreeSync Premium Pro, hitting an astonishing 1400 nits of peak HDR brightness with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification.

But the display story doesn’t stop there. Paired in the bundle are the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses. I donned these bad boys, and was pretty impressed by what I saw.

The projected screen was indeed hovering out in front of me, but it was surrounded by a gentle blackness that helped increase the contrast on the content and gave me the impression that I was in a movie theater for one. All I was able to see was some canned video content and clips from various game cinematics, but I was impressed with the quality, clarity and colour provided by the micro OLED setup. I was told that the glasses will also support nearly any USB C device that has display out capability, so these glasses are a flexible and extensible add-on for the Xbox Ally X20.

Early performance & experience

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get in any real play time with the ROG Xbox Ally X20 as the demo units were only displaying preview videos, but my brief experience with the XREAL glasses left me very excited and eager to see more.

At just 90 grams and matching the black-and-gold aesthetic of the Ally X20, they plug directly into the handheld via a single USB-C cable. Slipping them on instantly projects a massive, virtual 171-inch screen at a perceived four meters. The Micro OLED lenses run at a blistering 240Hz with a near-instant 0.01ms response time. With native 3DoF tracking, you can choose Anchor Mode to keep the massive screen completely locked in space, or let it smoothly follow your head movements.

The initial verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle isn’t just a hardware refresh; it’s a premium, collector-grade ecosystem play that dramatically raises the bar for what a handheld package can deliver. Between the drift-proof TMR joysticks, the gorgeous 7.4-inch OLED and the inclusion of high-end AR glasses, ASUS is offering an unparalleled portable theater experience. I’ll hopefully be diving deep into actual battery life tests and putting the Z2 Extreme through some real-world scenarios across a library of AAA games the second a retail unit lands on my test bench.
