Here’s how Canada’s top universities rank globally for 2027

23 June 20263 Mins Read

For students exploring their options, several universities in Canada remain among the 100 top globally.

QS recently released its World University Rankings 2027, which lists the world’s top universities based on several criteria, and a number of the highest-ranked institutions are right here in Canada.

The ranking compares more than 1,500 universities worldwide (narrowed down from a pool of over 8,000), and each one is scored across five key areas: research and discovery, employability outcomes, learning experience, global engagement, and sustainability.

This year, the top five remain unchanged compared to 2026, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at number one, followed by Imperial College London, Stanford University, University of Oxford, and Harvard University. However, universities in the Middle East and East Asia are “showing significant gains driven by intensifying research focus and a concerted effort to broaden horizons through internationalisation.”

In a constantly changing job market, this year’s focus is on employability.

“One undeniable theme is the increased scrutiny of graduate outcomes. While employability has always been a key pillar of university education, in an age stalked by concerns about AI and the future of work, this has become a more pertinent topic than ever,” states the report. “Students investing time and money in a university education are starting to question whether their degree can deliver the rewards that it once promised.”

Although the same four Canadian universities are among the 100 again this year, each of them has slipped slightly in the rankings. As Canada further caps the number of incoming international students, an increasing number of universities are facing major budget cuts.

Once again, McGill University in Montreal is the top Canadian university globally, despite falling three spots from number 27 to 30 this year. Here’s a look at the four universities across Canada and how they ranked globally in each category.
