You can explore planets and constellations on this Alberta stargazing tour

6 July 20263 Mins Read

Dark Sky Guides runs stargazing tours in Waterton Lakes National Park, showcasing a version of the night sky you rarely see in the city, in one of Alberta’s official Dark Sky Preserves. On a clear night, you can pick out constellations, planets, and spot the Milky Way stretching overhead.

Instead of trying to figure it all out on your own, a guide walks you through what you’re looking at in real time, pointing out stars and patterns you’d probably miss otherwise.

Out of the city, into the stars

According to Waterton Lakes National Park, it is one of five official Dark Sky Preserves in Alberta, which means it’s one of the best places in the province to see the night sky without the city light getting in the way. That’s exactly why Dark Sky Guides runs a range of stargazing tours here, designed to help you actually make the most of what you’re seeing once the stars come out.

Instead of one standard experience, you can choose how you want to explore. Some tours are slow and relaxed, while others are a bit more adventurous, so it really just depends on the kind of night you’re after.

According to Dark Sky Guides, one of the most popular tours is the Dark Sky Adventure Tour, which takes you out beyond the townsite and into darker, more open areas of Waterton where light pollution basically disappears. Throughout the experience, you’ll learn how to identify different constellations, spot planets, and follow patterns across the sky. And on a clear night, you might even catch meteors striking overhead or even see the northern lights if the conditions are right.

If you want something more low-key, the Starry Skies Townsite Stroll is an easy introduction to the night sky around the town. Instead of heading out into the backcountry, this one stays around the townsite and keeps things simple, letting you learn the basics of stargazing in a relaxed way.

What to know before you go

The tours run in Waterton Lakes National Park, which is roughly a three-hour drive from Calgary. Pricing starts at $46 per person, depending on the tour, and each experience varies in length, with some shorter and more relaxed while others run longer and take you further into the landscape.

Conditions matter a lot out here, so clear skies will give you the best views, and tours may shift slightly depending on the weather or visibility.

You’ll want to dress appropriately for the night. Even in the summer, temperatures drop fast once the sun goes down in the mountains, so layers are your best friend. Think warm jackets, comfy shoes, and anything you don’t mind standing or walking in for a couple of hours outside.

Each tour has its own meeting details, which will be shared after booking, so you’ll want to double-check your confirmation before you head out. It’s a good idea to arrive early, too, since groups are small and tours run on a set schedule.

So if you’re ready to trade city lights for starry nights, this is your chance to step into one of Alberta’s clearest skies and take it all in.

When: Open year-round
Time: 9 p.m. to midnight
Where: Waterton Lakes National Park, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $46
