5 small-town Alberta rodeos you won’t want to miss this summer

16 July 20264 Mins Read

The Calgary Stampede may have come to an end, but luckily, rodeo season is far from over. If you’re not quite ready to pack away your cowboy boots, there are plenty of rodeos happening across Alberta where you can catch more bull riding, barrel racing and all the western action.

We’ve rounded up some of the best small-town rodeos worth checking out this summer, each with its own unique atmosphere, traditions, and reasons to make the trip.

Let’s jump into it.

For a rodeo that doesn’t require a full day of driving, start with the Strathmore Stampede. Located just outside Calgary, this spot is a great way to keep the rodeo season going without venturing too far from the city. Along with all the action in the arena, you’ll also find live entertainment, family-friendly activities, chuckwagon races, and more.

When: Friday, July 31, to Monday, Aug. 3, 2026
Time: Races begin at 1 p.m. each day
Where: 33 Wheatland Trail, Strathmore, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $19.25

This one is for anybody who wants to turn their rodeo trip into a full weekend getaway. The Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo runs for three days and features professional rodeo events, a Western Market, live music, and a Rodeo Cabaret.

One of the biggest perks is that you can pair your plans with a visit to Waterton Lakes National Park, where you can spend time exploring trails, spotting wildlife, and taking in some of Alberta’s most scenic views.

When: Thursday, Aug. 13 to Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026
Time: Races begin at 6 p.m.
Where: 5:30 p.m.
Cost: Starting at $10

If you’re looking for a rodeo with a scenic backdrop, the Okotoks and Foothills Pro Rodeo takes over the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society for a weekend filled with races, local vendors, food trucks, and entertainment.

There will also be plenty to keep your kiddos busy, including Mutton Bustin’, where little ones get the chance to try their hand at riding sheep. As well as pony rides and dummy roping competitions, where they can test their skills.

When: Friday, Aug. 21 to Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026
Time: Gates open at 4 p.m.
Where: 3060971 192nd St. W, Millarville, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $17.50

With more than 45 years of history behind it, the Nanton Pro Rodeo has become a place where local rodeo talent gets its start. The event shines a spotlight on up-and-coming cowboys and cowgirls, while also welcoming some of the biggest names in the sport to the arena.

When: Friday, Aug. 28 to Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026
Time: Races start at 6 p.m.
Where: 2320 Golf Course Rd., Nanton, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $10

The Cochrane Lions Rodeo has been running since 1967, and according to organizers, it has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s toughest amateur rodeos, with competitions featuring everything from bull riding and saddle bronc riding to barrel racing and roping.

When you’re not watching all the action in the arena, there are tons of activities to check out, including a kids’ zone, petting zoo, and pig races, so the whole family can join in on the fun.

When: Friday, Sept. 4 to Monday, Sept. 7, 2026 (Labour Day weekend)
Time: Noon to 6 p.m.
Where: 109 5th Ave. Cochrane, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $10

So, whether you’re a rodeo regular or just looking for a fun excuse to explore more of Alberta, these events are a great way to keep the Stampede energy going. Now all that’s left to do is grab your friends, put those cowboy boots back on, and pick a rodeo to check out before summer comes to an end!
