The World’s Busiest Airports 2026, Ranked by ACI World, Canada Reviews

17 July 20263 Mins Read

Feel like the airport has been busier than ever lately? You’re not imagining it. Airports Council International (ACI World) has just confirmed the final rankings of the world’s busiest airports, based on 2025 traffic data from more than 2,800 hubs across 180-plus countries.

Global passenger traffic hit an estimated 9.8 billion people in 2025, up 3.7 percent on 2024 and a full 6.5 percent above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. It turns out flying has never been more popular.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world’s busiest (again)

Topping the passenger traffic charts, for the twenty-eighth year running (bar the Covid blip in 2020), is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which shuttled more than 106.3 million passengers through its terminals in 2025. It’s the only airport on the planet to break the 100 million mark.

Dubai International held onto second place with 95.2 million passengers, which is still more than 11 million behind Atlanta. Dubai remains the undisputed leader in international passenger traffic, a title it’s held for years, while Tokyo Haneda leapt up to third with 91.7 million passengers, overtaking Dallas Fort Worth in the process.

Shanghai Pudong posted the biggest jump inside the top 10, rocketing from tenth to fifth as international connectivity across Asia continues its post-pandemic recovery.

The other rankings that matter

For sheer traffic control chaos, Chicago O’Hare reclaimed the crown for aircraft movements, logging a staggering 857,392 takeoffs and landings in 2025 – more than 2,300 a day, on average. For cargo, Hong Kong International remains the world’s undisputed freight capital, moving over 5 million metric tonnes of goods through its runways, ahead of Shanghai Pudong and, curiously, Anchorage in Alaska, which punches way above its weight as a strategic refuelling stop on trans-Pacific cargo routes.

The 10 busiest airports in the world right now

  1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), USA – 106,302,208 passengers
  2. Dubai International Airport (DXB), UAE – 95,192,160 passengers
  3. Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), Japan – 91,679,814 passengers
  4. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), USA – 85,660,127 passengers
  5. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), China – 84,994,548 passengers
  6. Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), USA – 84,856,018 passengers
  7. London Heathrow Airport (LHR), UK – 84,482,126 passengers
  8. Istanbul Airport (IST), Turkey – 84,437,710 passengers
  9. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), China – 83,582,952 passengers
  10. Denver International Airport (DEN), USA – 82,427,962 passengers

Flying somewhere new this year? Here are the most exciting new flight routes launching in 2026.
