A town near Toronto is hosting an entire festival dedicated to this unexpected vegetable, Canada Reviews

Ontario is filled with festivals devoted to music, food and art, but there’s an entire two-day celebration taking place in Bradford next month dedicated to one surprisingly specific vegetable: the carrot.

The annual Carrot Fest returns to Bradford West Gwillimbury on Aug. 14 and 15, transforming downtown Bradford into a massive street festival with more than 150 vendors, live entertainment and, naturally, a few nods to the orange veggie that inspired the whole thing.

Festivities kick off Friday afternoon with a massive vendor market, a beer garden and entertainment across several stages. There’s also a special Kids Zone with an interactive Reptilia experience, so you can apparently celebrate carrots while hanging out with reptiles (this admittedly wasn’t on our summer bingo card, but we’re all for it!).

There’s a new Bingham Band Stand this year for acoustic performances, while the larger stages will feature more live entertainment, including a Chris Stapleton tribute. On Saturday, the Kids Zone switches things up a bit with inflatable games and Squash Ontario demonstrations.

And who knew that carrots and wrestling paired so well? Head to the Bradford & District Memorial Community Centre on Saturday: 365 Pro Wrestling will hold two shows! The noon performance is free, while a second show at 7 p.m. is ticketed at $20 at the door.

Don’t skip Saturday evening’s Flaming Carrot Finale at the TD Stage, where you can watch performances from festival buskers including jugglers and stunt artists.

As you can tell, Bradford takes its root vegetables seriously. The town sits alongside the Holland Marsh, where rich black organic soils have helped make the area one of the biggest carrot-producing regions in the country, earning it the nickname the “Heart of the Vegetable Industry!”

The festival itself has some surprisingly deep roots, too. Before there was Carrot Fest, Bradford hosted a Salad Festival in the 1970s, with an estimated 20,000 people turning out for the 1976 festival and parade. A Harvest Festival followed a year later, before a local committee began organizing an open-air market to promote the downtown core, which eventually became an event called Super Saturday in 1995.

After discovering that the area produced more than 70 per cent of Canada’s carrots, organizers decided that the humble carrot deserved top billing, and the first Carrot Fest in its current format arrived in 1998!

Today, it’s Bradford West Gwillimbury’s biggest annual event, attracting around 50,000 participants and generating roughly $1 million locally.

Not bad for a carrot.

Carrot Fest 2026 takes place in downtown Bradford along Holland Street and surrounding streets on Friday, Aug. 14, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (the beer garden stays open until 10 p.m.). Admission is free.
