Toronto native Shan Boodram, sex and relationships expert, is the new host of a very hot and exciting new reality TV show, Temptations Under the Sun: Cyprus. Here, 17 of the most seductive and fetching young lads and lasses in all the land, including two from sexy Toronto, compete in the ultimate rizz-off. We checked in with Boodram to hear all about it, and maybe get a few tips ourselves.
What makes dating in Toronto unique?
Big cities naturally create more opportunities, but they also create more opportunities for toxic behaviour because there are fewer social consequences. If you develop a bad reputation in one group, it’s much easier to move on to another group where nobody knows you. I often joke that Toronto has some of the most beautiful people in the world. When I lived there, you’d go out with friends and everyone would be competing for the same people because there are just so many options.
Do you get to Toronto often?
I’ll actually be back soon because of the Toronto [Caribbean] Carnival. I’ve participated in Carnival almost my entire life, and this year my sister and I even have our own section with costumes we designed ourselves. It’s nice coming home now, not just to visit family, but also to contribute in a different way and celebrate the city’s culture.
What are the first things you like to do when you’re back?
Scarborough Bluffs is always at the top of my list. I also love the little waterfall off Bellamy Road and spending time outdoors. The food is unmatched. The Thai food is incredible, the Punjabi food.
What drew you to Temptations Under the Sun?
What I loved about Temptations Under the Sun is that it’s honest. It says, “We’re not trying to find love or change the world. We’re putting Canada’s hottest, coolest and most seductive people together in one house to outsmart, outplay and outcharm one another.” It felt like authentic fun, and I appreciated that everyone could be honest with themselves and with the audience.
You’re known as an intimacy expert, but this is also a high-energy reality competition. How did you balance being a guide, host and observer?
It felt natural because it was genuinely fun to watch. As much as I’m known for teaching relationships, and I have a MasterClass called The Art of Sex Appeal, I’ve also spent a long time navigating the dating world myself, so I found the whole experience fascinating.
What makes someone truly seductive?
It’s about being strategic, not just during the initial encounter, but creating a lasting impression that stays with someone after you’ve left. Charm is also a huge part of it. On this show you aren’t just trying to impress one person. Everyone’s opinion matters, so you have to know how to get what you want without burning bridges. A true seducer knows how to be persuasive while still leaving people feeling respected.
The cast comes from across Canada, including several people from Toronto. Did you notice differences between people from different cities?
I noticed contestants from smaller communities sometimes had an advantage because they understood how quickly reputations spread. They’re more aware that their actions can have long-term consequences because everyone knows everyone.
Temptations Under the Sun: Cyprus premieres on Aug. 7. on Crave.
