B.C. has ancient rock pools carved out by glaciers 15,000 years ago

11 August 20263 Mins Read

Did you know that B.C. is home to ancient rock pools that were carved out by glaciers during the last ice age? The famed Sooke Potholes are a true natural marvel and testament to our province’s unique landscape, offering a cool, refreshing dip to those who discover them. Situated adjacent to Sooke River, the potholes are part of a provincial park, not to be confused with Sooke Potholes Regional Park.

Some of the best freshwater swimming in B.C.

The latter is a separate park by the river that protects significant Coho and Chinook salmon populations and their spawning areas. It’s a great spot to catch the salmon run every fall, as well as take advantage of catch-and-release fishing opportunities.

The potholes, however, are found at the provincial park. According to BC Parks, glacial movement some 15,000 years ago carved a deep path into the natural bedrock, leaving a series of fascinating, crystal-clear potholes behind.

Today, the area is considered to have some of the best freshwater swimming in B.C.

In addition to taking a dip, visitors can hike the moderate 12.9 km out-and-back trail from Sooke Potholes to Empress Mountain. Along the way, you’ll find multiple waterfalls and a lake, and sweeping views of the rolling hills and ocean at the end.

You can also explore shorter, forested trails and enjoy some spectacular viewpoints at Mary Vine Falls, if you’re keen on hopping to the nearby Galloping Goose Regional Trail, a former railway running from Sooke to Victoria.

And if you see the wilderness journey to the end, you’ll be rewarded with striking views and wildlife at Roche Cove Regional Park.

Know before you visit

Note that the park is for day use only, and there are no available facilities onsite. The District of Sooke has instead provided parking, toilet, and garbage can facilities adjacent to the park.

Those intent on camping can head to the 67-site RV and tent Spring Salmon Place Campground at the north end of the park (open until mid September), where there are garbage bins, toilets, drinking water stations, picnic tables, and fire rings available for use.

The potholes are a 45-minute drive away from Victoria, so consider adding this to your trip itinerary the next time you’re on the South Island!

How to get there: Take a ferry from Vancouver to Victoria and drive 46 minutes to Sooke Potholes Provincial Park via Trans-Canada Hwy/BC-1 N and Juan De Fuca Hwy/Sooke Rd/BC-14 W.
