Toronto exhibition explores work of historic shoe designer who pioneered the metal heel

Calling all Toronto shoe lovers and fashionistas everywhere! Dive into footwear history and explore the work of an esteemed designer at the Bata Shoe Museum this summer.

André Perugia is one of the most important craftsmen in women’s footwear. His designs and legacy can still be seen and felt around the world today, though his works are often under-researched. 

Now, Toronto museum-goers are getting an intimate look at some newly displayed Perugia artifacts, with the André Perugia exhibition. A total of 22 new items will be shown, while nearly 100 artifacts will be exhibited.

It’s shoe time, baby! Here’s a sneak peek of some treasures found at the Bata Shoe Museum’s Perugia exhibition. 

Mask Shoe

As one of the most recognizable Perugia designs, the mask shoe was iconic and led to multiple copies from other designers.

Inspired by Venetian masks, the shoe was first released in 1923 and was often revised and remixed throughout Perugia’s career.

Cut-out designs 

Perugia’s style is marked by his sharp attention to detail, with signature features like recurring motifs, delicate trims, contrasting leather and cutouts. It’s these labour-intensive, fine details that made his designs stand out from the rest — and continue to inspire.

Blade Heel

Perhaps one of Perugia’s most innovative designs, the Blade Heel rewrote women’s footwear history when it debuted its steel heels in the 1950s. Unlike anything designed at the time, these heels were revolutionary — and helped lay the groundwork for the development of the stiletto. 

Golden Platform

Perugia’s gold and silver platform sandals are a remarkable example of his work made in collaboration with major fashion houses. These sandals were a partnership between Elsa Schiaparelli and mix silver and gold leather to create a very modern design.
