Late summer and early fall are prime times for getting out of the house, whether you’re heading out for a morning walk, running errands, exploring a new trail, or spending the day at an outdoor event. But you don’t always need a full-size backpack to carry the basics. A small bag that keeps your phone, wallet, keys, and other essentials close by can be much more practical when you’re on the move.

If you could use one, The North Face Terra Lumbar Waist Pack is an especially good option to have on hand. Right now, REI has it marked down 30%, bringing the price from $30 to just $21. Its compact design comes in five colors, giving you a few options to match your everyday style, while the 1-liter capacity provides enough room for your must-haves

The zippered main compartment is this 1-liter pack’s primary storage space, with enough room for everyday essentials you don’t want rattling around in your pockets. You could use it for a phone, wallet, sunglasses, a small tube of sunscreen, hand sanitizer, snacks, or even a compact camera when you’re out for the day.

Inside, a secure-zip mesh pocket with a built-in key clip creates a separate spot for smaller items that might be easy to lose in a larger compartment. Clip your house or car keys in place, then use the mesh pocket for things like earbuds, lip balm, cards, or a charging cable so you can find them without having to dig through everything else.

For items you want within quicker reach, the external secure-zip pocket is positioned closest to your body, making it a convenient place to stash a boarding pass, ID, transit card, tissues, or other small necessities you may need while traveling or running errands. An external bungee cord on the front of the bag adds another layer of utility, giving you a place to secure something bulkier that won’t fit inside the main compartment, such as a lightweight rain jacket or extra layer.

The adjustable waist strap lets you customize the fit, while reflective webbing adds visibility when you’re walking or cycling in lower-light conditions. Made with recycled nylon and polyester treated with a durable, water-repellent finish, the unisex pack is designed for both casual use and travel, and it’s approved as a carry-on.
