‘Kaiju No. 8’ Officially Returns in 3 Weeks After 1 Year of Waiting — but There’s a Catch

15 August 20264 Mins Read

Kaiju No. 8 has become one of anime’s most entertaining modern hits, pairing giant-monster spectacle a la Godzilla with a surprisingly goofy workplace comedy. The series follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old sanitation worker who dreams of joining the Defense Force. Through mysterious circumstances, he gains the ability to transform into a humanoid kaiju himself — and one that’s incredibly powerful at that. The series is appropriately chock-full of enormous battles and increasingly wild transformations, but its best moments come from watching Kafka and his fellow soldiers bounce off one another. Animated by Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass) and directed by Shigeyuki Miya, the series has developed a distinctive balance between blockbuster action and character-driven comedy that makes it easy to see why Kaiju No. 8 has become such a fixture in modern anime.

Fans shouldn’t expect its long-awaited next chapter just yet, but the series is making a resurgence in September with Kaiju No. 8: Narumi’s Week at Work.

The four-episode original short anime focuses on Gen Narumi, the wildly powerful and deeply unserious captain of the Defense Force’s First Division. It’s a smaller, sillier detour from the main story, but gives one of the series’ most entertaining characters the spotlight he deserves in the long wait for its next chapter.

Narumi’s Week at Work isn’t simply a collection of bonus shorts thrown together to fill the gap. The new series draws together many of the same names behind the original series, including Miya as director, Tetsuya Nishio handling character designs, and Production I.G. producing. In other words, while the scale may be smaller for this side story, it’s still very much Kaiju No. 8. Expect a more laid-back story that’s more interested in what the characters get up to when they’re supposed to be working.

What is Kaiju No. 8: Narumi’s Week at Work?

If you’ve watched Kaiju No. 8, you’ll know Gen Narumi as the First Division captain and one of the Defense Force’s most formidable fighters. He’s also an enormous personality: brilliant, arrogant, easily distracted, and considerably less interested in the mundane responsibilities of being a captain than in playing video games. The new short series is built around that contradiction, allowing fans a chance to see Narumi when he’s not fighting for humanity’s survival.

Unlike the main Kaiju No. 8 anime, Narumi’s Week at Work is an original narrative rather than a straightforward adaptation of Matsumoto’s manga. The story draft was penned by Kizuku Watanabe, who also worked on the comedic Kaiju No. 8: Relax spinoff manga. The series will run for four episodes, with each one focusing on another part of Narumi’s increasingly chaotic work life.

Kaiju No. 8 has always had a slightly goofy workplace comedy hiding underneath its overarching monster-fighting premise, and Narumi is perfectly designed to draw out that side of the series. Instead of getting another action-packed battle of epic proportions, Narumi’s Week at Work offers a chance to watch one of the Defense Force’s strongest soldiers struggle with the less glamorous parts of his job.

When is the Kaiju No. 8: Narumi’s Week at Work release date?

The first episode of Kaiju No. 8: Narumi’s Week at Work premieres on Sept. 5, with the remaining three episodes arriving weekly on Sept. 12, Sept. 19, and Sept. 26. In Japan, the episodes will premiere on Saturdays at 8 p.m. JST on TOHO animation’s YouTube channel.

For international viewers, the good news is that you won’t need to track down some obscure Japanese broadcast or wait for a later release, as Crunchyroll will stream the short anime the same day it premieres. For viewers in the United States, expect new episodes to drop at 7 a.m. EDT.

So, while the main Kaiju No. 8 series might not be returning yet, in just three weeks, Narumi’s Week at Work offers a slight, four-episode detour, giving the franchise one more chance to have some fun before the main anime’s final chapter arrives.
