A 1971 Jethro Tull song has earned another place in classic rock history, more than five decades after its release.
“Aqualung,” the title track from the British progressive rock band’s landmark album, was ranked No. 10 on Collider’s list of “The 10 Most Perfect Guitar Solos in Classic Rock History.”
The ranking, published Aug. 11, 2026, featured the guitar work of Martin Barre and pointed to the song’s unusual mix of hard rock, acoustic music and blues. The nearly seven-minute track also has a connection to Family Guy, where fans may recognize its famous guitar lick.

The “Aqualung” track stands out because it does not stay in one musical style. Collider described it as a “pastiche of three different guitar styles,” beginning with a recognizable opening guitar figure before moving into an acoustic section.
“Aqualung” was released in 1971 as part of Jethro Tull’s fourth studio album. The song was never issued as a single, yet it became one of the band’s best-known recordings.
The guitar solo then brings those different sounds together. It uses crunchy distortion and bluesy vibrato while returning to the harder rock sound heard earlier in the song.
Martin Barre played the electric guitar on the recording, while Ian Anderson handled vocals and acoustic guitar. John Evan played piano and electronic organ, Jeffrey Hammond played bass and Clive Bunker performed drums and percussion.
The original recording runs for 6:34. Its length and changing sections made it different from the short radio hits that were common at the time.
According to Songfacts, the song itself grew from an idea inspired by photographs of homeless people in London taken by Anderson’s then-wife, Jennie Franks. The couple wrote the song together. Anderson later said the subject also brought out feelings of guilt, fear and uncertainty about homelessness.
The lyrics focus on the title character and the way people react when they encounter someone living without a home.
The album was also sometimes described as a concept album because of its themes involving religion, society and homelessness.
The success of Aqualung marked an important point in Jethro Tull’s career. The band had already achieved success in the United Kingdom, but the 1971 album became its international breakthrough and helped establish Jethro Tull as a major progressive rock act.
