GTA 6 Is Too Big For These Leaks To Hurt It

When game companies get hacked, the hackers’ motivations are usually the same as for any other data breach: clout, extortion, or simply because they can. That’s not the case with this latest Grand Theft Auto 6 leak, which, I regret to inform you, has its origins in Gaming Discourse.

Cyberleek, the group claiming responsibility, has published a kind of manifesto framing the hack as punitive action for perceived infractions by GTA developer Rockstar Games. These include locking some character customizations behind the $100 Ultimate Edition and only selling digital copies of the game. (GTA 6 will be available to buy in stores, but only as a code in a box.)

These causes will be popular with quite a few GTA fans and gamers generally — especially in the wake of Sony’s decision to phase out physical PlayStation games entirely, which has inspired a kind of “gamers’ rights” crusade online. Rockstar (perhaps the most successful and influential game developer in the world) and GTA 6 (expected to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time) are suitable targets for this quasi-politicized ire; Cyberleek is certainly punching up.

Will the leak actually hurt Rockstar, though? It depends what you mean by “hurt.”

Rockstar is certainly absolutely infuriated. Its PR campaign for GTA 6 has been extremely measured, not to say withholding; we still haven’t seen official gameplay yet. That reveal is finally planned for next week, on Aug. 27, where it will debut on Netflix. For rough, unedited gameplay footage to leak at the eleventh hour will be excruciating for a control-freak studio which has always been meticulous in the extreme about how its games are presented — and paranoid or vengeful about any deviations from the script.

This gives the leak a certain symbolic power. Rockstar embodies control, and Cyberleek’s complaints center on perceived abuses of the mesmeric hold GTA has over a massive gaming audience. The hack has, temporarily at least, taken control out of Rockstar’s hands. It’s hit the studio exactly where it hurts. And it adds insult to the injury of the 2022 leak, which revealed substantial portions of development builds of the game years before its reveal, never mind release.

But this latest leak is definitely more insult than injury (as evidenced by the slogans Cyberleek has slapped on the video clips). The build shown may not reflect the current state of GTA 6 or even show it at its best. But the game, at least based on this footage, looks solid, vivid, and full of life. It looks like you would expect a new GTA game to look — that is to say, like a technological high water mark.

Cyberleek has yet to show anything that will embarrass Rockstar, or any radical changes to the gameplay that the studio would want to put in full context, or any content that would require more delicate messaging. It hasn’t shown any story spoilers (wisely, as this would surely turn fans against them). While some have grumbled that the footage looks underwhelming, the conversation around it has mostly centered on the nitty-gritty of the GTA experience, like how the Wanted system works, or the size of the map. Important stuff for GTA fans, but hardly the biggest of bullet points.

You could even argue that Rockstar now has the chance to throw this rather workaday footage of Jason hanging out at home or beating up a pedestrian into sharp relief with its official gameplay reveal next week. I doubt the studio would see it the same way. But I have a feeling that Rockstar’s “extended look” will blow this footage out of the water and relegate it to a footnote.

In the end — as painful as leaks like this are for game developers — the Grand Theft Auto 6 juggernaut will barely register this leak, especially at this late stage, as it builds up formidable momentum. Cyberleek might have drawn attention to its cause, but it’s done so in a disreputable way that has actually principled gaming activists like the Stop Killing Games movement deploring its actions.

Cyberleek has also started diversifying its message and using the leak to advertise cryptocurrency. In the end, the hackers are revealing themselves to be just another set of grifters, making the most of their 15 minutes. You can bet on Rockstar and GTA 6 outliving that.
