LaSalle College obtains creditor protection after being fined $30 million

LaSalle College has obtained creditor protection after the Quebec government fined the institution $30 million for having too many students in its English-language programs.

The college is also asking the government to reinstate subsidies for the coming academic year that were withheld because of the fines. 

Classes were supposed to begin this week but will be on hold until they receive the funding. 

The provincial government imposed limits on the number of students in English-language college programs as part of a new language law passed in 2022.

LaSalle College exceeded that limit in the two academic years after it came into effect. 

Director Claude Marchand says they needed a transition period before being able to meet the new limit.
