A modest but respectable opening for the movie that was once abandoned by Warner Bros.
While Coyote vs. ACME didn’t top the box office charts on its opening weekend, it beat out the likes of The Odyssey and a new movie from Ridley Scott. Considering the movie had to be promoted and released independently by Ketchup Entertainment after Warner Bros. abandoned it, that’s a very respectable start.
Deadline reports that Coyote vs. ACME grossed $15.4 million over the course of its first weekend. It has already grossed nearly double what the Looney Tunes film The Day the Earth Blew Up earned during its entire run. Although $15.4 million might seem like a modest opening weekend gross in a summer full of blockbusters, Deadline’s reporting highlights that the flick only had a $10 million marketing budget, as Ketchup Entertainment had to handle the entire release itself.
Coyote vs. ACME was originally produced by Warner Bros., but the studio decided to shelve the film in 2023 and take a $30 million write-off on it. Ketchup Entertainment obtained the rights to release it and has done so on its own, making the fact that Coyote vs. ACME is coming to theaters and finding success at all very impressive.
The reviews for Coyote vs. ACME have been glowing too, with Polygon’s Brian VanHooker writing, “As a lifelong Looney Tunes fan who has been very invested in this whole drama, it was entirely worth the wait.”
What were the highest-grossing movies of the weekend?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its dominant box office run, so it healthily remained in the first place spot this weekend. Coyote vs. ACME prevented The Odyssey from taking the second-place spot on this weekend’s charts, and it vastly outgrossed The Dog Stars, a new movie from Alien and The Martian director Ridley Scott. It’s not the summer box office’s highest-grossing weekend, but perhaps its most interesting one.
Below, you can read through the full list of the top ten highest-grossing movies from this three-day weekend that Deadline shared:
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day – $22.2 million
