Welcome back to the Vancouver Group Chat, your go-to for some of the city’s biggest updates. We’re also committed to passing along the tidbits that might not be making waves yet, but which you’ll definitely want on your radar.
This week, for example, we’re gearing up for another Car Free Day, lamenting about bad drivers (like, really, really bad), and putting you onto fun, accessible activities like adult colouring club and a neat author talk discussing B.C.’s most terrifying cold cases.
If any of these sound like a treat to you, you know what to do. Hit send in that group chat!
What’s new, Vancouver?
Sunset appreciation post
One thing we always have time for is a Vancouver sunset appreciation post, especially as the last weeks of summer roll around.
This one is currently going viral on the Vancouver Reddit page, with people celebrating Monday night’s absolutely breathtaking sky.
The deep orange, wispy clouds add a whole new level of dreaminess, and we hope everyone got at least a glimpse of it in person.
If not, though, these photos really do it justice.
“I’m never leaving Vancouver,” one person commented.
“Everyone in frame stopped what they were doing to watch it. That’s what makes the shot,” says another.
Tesla drivers never do themselves any favours
On the flipside, people had a lot to say about this post of a fined Tesla driver, who apparently didn’t know “she wasn’t allowed to drive and park on the sidewalk.” Eyeroll.
The incident happened in Burnaby on the morning of Aug. 17, and ended with a fine of $109.
“What other basic driving laws does she not know?” said one Redditor.
“If you’re an ‘N’ driver and you claim you don’t know you can’t park on sidewalks, you should lose your licence until you take some classes.”
At this point, maybe every Tesla should come with a trigger warning on a bumper sticker.
Car-free on Commercial
Honestly, going car-free sounds pretty clutch right now. Imagine a world where all the reckless, inconsiderate, and just plain dumb drivers of the world just disappeared. While we can only dream about the latter, we’ll settle for a fun car-free street party that reminds us just how walkable Vancouver is.
This Saturday, Sept. 5, Car Free Day is coming back to Commercial Drive, and it’s the perfect outdoor event to incorporate into your long weekend plans if you’re staying around the city.
There will be tons of cool vendors (food and hyperlocal merch like the iconic Mr. Mattress t-shirts), as well as a range of live music and entertainment from noon to 7 p.m.
Already have plans for the Labour Day weekend? There’s another Car Free Day coming to Main Street on Sept. 13, so mark your calendars for that!
