Call for applications: Publishing manager, Theater News

Intermission is an online performing arts magazine based in Toronto, Ontario, founded in 2015 to address the decline in Canadian performing arts coverage by legacy media. We publish features about upcoming productions, news stories, interviews and roundtables with theatre artists, first-person Artist Perspectives, reviews, and more. The magazine team includes editorial director Karen Fricker, senior editor Liam Donovan, publishing and editorial coordinator Krystal Abrigo, and staff writer Nathaniel Hanula-James.

Intermission works with a partnership business model in which theatres pay for advertisements, and the magazine runs articles about the theatre and its work that are not editorially vetted by the theatre (this model is similar to what the Toronto Star and the Guardian call supported content). Our reviews are separately funded and independent of partner stories. Since 2023, our editorial content has expanded to include the popular Friday Folio newsletter; Hanula-James’ monthly Speaking in Draft column; a series of long-form articles debuting during the 2026-27 theatre season; and work by participants in the national criticism professionalization and mentorship program Page Turn. Our growing roster of public funders includes Canadian Heritage, Ontario Creates, and the Toronto Arts Council.

Leading Toronto theatres and arts organizations like Canadian Stage, Tarragon Theatre, and Luminato Festival are Intermission partners; beyond Toronto, our partners include the Stratford Festival, the Grand Theatre (in London, Ontario), Theatre Aquarius (in Hamilton, Ontario), and Theatre Calgary.

We are seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and theatre-loving individual to join our team as the publishing manager.

Position duties

The publishing manager will:

  • Manage publishing operations including website operations, finance, and bookkeeping
  • Be the primary contact with advertising partners along with the senior editor
  • Pitch partnerships, and prepare and maintain partnership agreement documents
  • Oversee the partnership publication schedule in collaboration with the senior editor and publishing and editorial coordinator
  • Supervise the publishing and editorial coordinator in their publishing work
  • Participate in annual budgeting
  • Coordinate financials and liaise with our accountant toward tax filing
  • Liaise with the editorial director around magazine operations, finances, and human resources
  • Run twice-monthly team meetings
  • Support marketing initiatives
  • Write an introduction to the Friday Folio newsletter once every five to six weeks

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Professional experience in an arts and/or publishing organization
  • Proficiency in budgeting and bookkeeping
  • Experience generating and tracking business agreements
  • Experience managing members of a team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong time management skills and the capacity to multi-task
  • A keen interest in arts publishing, and in Canadian theatre and performing arts
  • A demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, decolonization, and inclusion
  • As a plus, experience with Google Workspace, QuickBooks, WordPress, Buffer, and/or Canva

Applications are welcome from candidates anywhere in Canada, bearing in mind that most Intermission activity happens during business hours in the Eastern time zone.

Terms of contract

This remote contract position pays $1,250/month for an estimated 40 hours per month of work, plus $150 per Friday Folio introduction. Other than semimonthly online team meetings, the work is independent and the publishing manager sets their own hours, in dialogue with team members as necessary.

Start date of October 1, 2026, or earlier if the hired candidate is available.

Application process

Please send your resume/CV and a cover letter addressing your qualifications and interest in the position to Intermission ([email protected]) with the subject line “Application: Publishing Manager” by 5 p.m. Eastern daylight time on Friday, September 18, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a virtual interview during the week of September 21, 2026. All candidates will be notified about the outcome of their application. Please send any questions about the position to the same email address.

We welcome applicants of every identity, and especially encourage folx who identify as Women, Gender minorities, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, 2SLGBTQ+, d/Deaf, Mad, Disabled/People with Disabilities, and/or Neurodiverse to apply.
